I have an awesome credit score and I'm also afraid that they, knowing that, would try and snag my ID. I swear if they did I would be at their house with a bat. The whole thing pisses me off. What makes the situation hard is that one of the people involved is family. Don't give a s*** about this person, but it might cause a rift.....I would prefer to provide the information with agreement no one knows who it comes from.

I think I may go that route. I don't even want to give my name (anonymous leaks tend to the trend in the press).
As far as being the wrong place to ask this question...doesn't it make it more interesting? I air out some big problems and take input......and I don't do it under a handle so I'm not full of s***. I have friends I've known for a long time on this board.
This is quite a dilemma, to rat out someone who doing something horrible but is not affecting you at all.
Frankly, I would not associate with these people or anyone who is associating with these people. Maybe you don't rat them out, but involving yourself in any way is a bad idea.

I don't talk to them, but association will happen because of how close of family they are. I'm going to "rat"...although I really disagree with that term. I didn't go to college for five years and get a degree and two minors to have some a hole screw that up for me.
So here is the next problem, I know their names, and the general area they live and i have good idea at what they are doing. Is that enough? I don't have a specific address and they both have small time warrants out for their arrest. The Oregon legislature recently passed some ten year prison sentence for identity thieves, so that would put them away for a while.
Any cops on here offer advice? Do you go to the local police or the FBI? I'm not tech on my crimes. Do I need more information?

You might be able to get them on warrants, but I would think the coppers would want some kind of evidence - or want you to get them the evidence. It's those damn Russians up in Woodburn. Small fee and they'll print you off whatever you need. Hell, for a large fee they will sell you the machine to do it yourself. All they need is a SS# and the name to go with it. Seriously F'd up.

If I was in your shoes and knew what they were doing but did nothing about it, I think I would feel too guilty to NOT report it. Imagine their next victim being your grandmother.

Having seen what an f'ing disaster it is for the folks getting their identity swiped (my assistant and my mother-in-law), I say go over to their house and beat them to death with your bat.

My car was broken into in a parking lot right after a trip last year and all my ID stolen (two separate bags with drivers license, military ID, soc sec card, passport, all credit cards, etc.) I've done everything I can to protect myself, but still wonder if my info is just sitting on a desk awaiting activation...

18 USC 1028(A) is actually the killer fed statute for ID theft; it mandates a minimum 2 years jail time for using another person's ID in connection with a bunch of other crimes. Now, lots of people commit ID theft of different types for different purposes and never get hit with that statute, mind you, but it's there in the prosecutor's toolbox. Often, if it's charged, it's intended to be a tool in a plea bargain...admit everything else, and we'll drop the 1028(A) piece.

It's mostly I remember the president saying something along those lines of it being terrorism. But then again, what isn't these days.
