I'm going to be doing some DH races in the beginner class this season and was looking for some advice.I have two different bikes,an 05 heckler and an 03 bighit comp.I'am going to be using a fox talas 36.which do you think would be better to use for the beginnner class? Also would it be worth my money to get a used double crown fork? Thanks for the help.:monkeydance:

also depends on how you ride. if you are really smooth and confident that you will be fine on the talas, then roll with it. otherwise i'd say look into a used DC fork. FWIW a lot of times beginner and sport classes run the same course; sport class is just more competitive.

As Coma said, it also depends on where you race. I'd say you'll feel more comfortable on the BigHit at any given track. It will feel more stable at higher speeds, and be a bit more forgiving on rough terrain.

:spam: I've got a 2002 Marzocchi SuperT in perfect condition for sale! It'd be a great fork for the BigHit!

Either could be raced, the Big Hit might be a bit better. The 36 will be fine. Don't buy a new fork because you think you might need one. The 36 is plenty strong and the performance is great.

talas is fine.......race sport, both classes are full of sandbaggers that will have near expert times and beginner will probably have alot more entries..

:stupid: I ended up racing expert back in the 90's due to this exact scenario. Just ended up riding with 'better' people. Times were similar.

I think the geometry on the big hit is more suited for DH than the heckler. HRDTLBRO's most likely correct when he said that the big hit's gonna be more stable at high speed... especially through the terrain and incline you plan on tackling during those races.

As far as the fork, you should be G2G with the 36 Talias. Just make sure to get a strong short stem.... like a Diabolous or something similar, and lock on grips.

If you want to spend $ on somehting you might want to see if the Big Hit long travel kit is still available from Specialized. At one point it was $400 retail for a longer shock and swing link to give you 8" of travel. The geometry stays very close to stock so the 36 would be fine. Have fun! What you have now is more than adaquate for a beginner race.

FWIW, I've pored through last year's results trying to identify the sandbaggers. Couldn't find 'em.

Have a blast your first year on the circuit. You'll figure out what to run pretty quickly.

Oh yeah, and the 'have fun' thing? Dead on.
