i was thinking about getting my bikes powder coated this summer, but was maybe considering just painting them myself. anybody have any experience with this? like what works best to sand the paint off with and would auto primer and paint be the best? i have a banshee scream and a giant stp. i wanted to do both frames and probably forks. i figured it would be something fun to do when i find the time. not sure if it would save me a bunch of trouble and money to just get them powder coated like i first planned though. i need some other peoples thoughts on this.

ive never [ainted a bike but ive done a lot of paintwork on cars. the key is in the prep work. all the equipmwnt could cost you a lot more than powercoating depending on what you already have. also is your scream anodised you may need to acid dip it or something way more expensive. i have a morphine and i dont know of anything that reaally take the anodising on it off within reason. paint for both bike and forks should be fairly cheap, a good amount of 400 800 and 2000 grit sandpaper will be needed along with a spray gun air compressor that doesnt have an auto oil feed. and theres a lot of other stuff too. so i would recommend just powdercoating them and caliing it a day

strip it with Jasco paint remover, then wire brush, then wet sand. I use rattle cans. Several coats of primer sanding between coats. Then three or four coats of color then the same with clearcoat. Works great on my frames.

powdercoating is cheaper than you think. i got mine done for $140 (front triangle, swingarm, r.shock coil). its more durable, looks better. especially for a dh/fr bike. plus you won't have to keep re-doing it.

Powdercoating is way better. more durable, plus they look sick. My friends and I bought a gun and have been powdercoating our stuff for a year and a half now, we even built our own oven and bought a sandblaster. Email me if you're interested, we have all kinds of pictures too
