I look forward to yet another season without a lift-assisted DH spot. (3rd year? 4th?) I echo NCRider's question: Why do I even own a DH bike?

The answer to that is that I won't for much longer. Time to go to a multi-front ring, 5-6 inch freeride bike to ride my local "hill" that is extremely short, super technical and has some nice jumps. The 20 second runs have been the only DH riding I have done in the last 4 years except a yearly trip to Washington.

For this I would like to thank the short-sighted, selfish, expert-level racer who sued Summit. I hope he reads this post: I feel bad for what happened to you, but did you literally have to ruin DH for all So Cal? Was it worth it?

You have to live with that knowledge for the rest of your life. Seems a high price to pay for $$$$$.

Luckily, my main sport is surfing. If it was DH, like NCRider, I'd move.

There are a few really cool DH runs that can be shuttled around here, that's all I hit up on my DH bike. Just head out to the San Gabriels and you're good! My only problem is finding guys to regularly shuttle with, but once you're at the top the runs are longer than Summit could ever be.

It wasn't the riders choice to sue the mountain....Insurance companies will do anything they can to not pay out the money that you shovel into their pockets..

FYI: The guy sued Summit because they lined their DH course with rebar, which seems to be the more short sited move, and he lost his case in court.

many races have rebar lining the course. Yes, he lost in court because if you race bikes (or ski) you accept the implied risk.

Yes the course was lined with rebar and guess what else? He knew all about it. Don't race if it's too dangerous. Nobody forced him to race.

Summit eventually won, but the $$ it costs to defend a suit that makes it further than summary judgment is insane - It's insane even if the case gets decided at summary judgment.

One way to avoid this type of suit: LOSER PAYS ALL LEGAL FEES. No one would roll the dice on the type of case that almost never wins.

That is what they do in England. I'm not sure if people would be happy with the courts doing that here.

The real issue at Snow Summt was the P/L statement for DH riding wasn't favorable enough. Snow Summit wasn't making any money and had a ton of risk by allowing people to partake in a very dangerous activity.

Hate to break it to everyone but there weren't enough people riding at Snow Summit to make it profitable for them.

I hope to hit the lifts a few times this year in BB. I can smell that sweet clean air as I type this :clapping: It looks like I have too much work lined up for summer to make it to Mammoth.
