"Hey Cleetus! Look at that huge animal which has obviously lived a long time in order to reach that size and poses no threat to me or my family whatoever! I'm gonna kill it for no reason at all!"

Well, wild pigs are feral pests for one thing. They arent native to the area, and they compete with deer, turkey and other animals for resources. They are also tasty and can cause significant crop damage if you're a farmer. And as with anything, if you're going to do it, might as well go as big as possible for bragging rights.

"He said he shot the huge animal eight times with a .50-caliber revolver and chased it for three hours through hilly woods before finishing it off with a point-blank shot."

I dont like the hunter-mentality. "I will go out and kill the animal in a fair fight...standing 100 feet away and shoot it before it even knows I am there"

Thanks for enlightening us all on what the "hunter mentality" is. Conservation today would not be possible without hunting as a form of population control. Is it any more or less fair than buying chicken or cow at the store?

I don't think that kid has ever chased anything other than a ice cream truck for three hours.

Yepper. I would. I have never run into a feral pig. But if I did. I would most certainly shoot it. I just like shooting things I guess....

I am a hunter of limited scope... I like hunting Geese, and that is about it. Ducks are pretty majestic birds as are most of the other water fowl... I don't hunt Deer, but in the past when I did, I only would go out for archery season, with a bow that had no sights on it... If I couldn't make the kill shot for certain, I wouldn't shoot (and never did) I have killed chipmunks and red squirrels groundhogs and the occasional rabbit that were nuisance creatures either causing damage to my garden or house...

I understand the people who kill for the meat. I understand those that kill for protection of their investment (farmers etc)... but I don't really get those that hunt for "SPORT" It makes me wonder if they have issues with their sexuality, or are compensating for the size of their appendage!

As BS said, with the destruction caused by pigs, he would be in a graveyard if I saw him.

If people don't start keeping their fighting style dogs at home and not in my yard with my little girl and chasing me on my road bike, I am going to start a new form of sport hunting.

I wouldn't be using the "conversation" or the "damage to local crops" arguments here. This pig was shot on a commercial hunting reserve.

I am a hunter...I hunt for meat and do eat whatever I kill. I have never killed anything that big, and I am aware of the destruction they cause so maybe I would ??? Do you eat it? I like bacon!!!

Exactly. It' slike cutting dow a 1000 year-old tree. It's made it this long, you've had the thrill of SEEING it. Why do you have to be the a-hole to keep other from seeing it?
Better than letting some other a-hole get a chance to shoot at it.

I can't imagine meat from a pig that big would taste that good, but I could be wrong. They made food from it, I don't really see a problem with it.

Feral pigs cause huge amounts of damage to local environments. Considering the options are to have scientists go out and poison them or have some so-called "rednecks" shoot them I'll side with the hill-billies..

The negative comments section on their website is just disgusting though. I still can't believe how cowardly some of those people are. I kind of envision a Jay and Silent Bob style adventure to track all of them down and beat the crap out of them.

There is a herd/school/bigolemessof of feral pigs in Grays Harbor county. They are quite mean. There is a bounty on them.

Did you know a domesticated pig can revert to a feral pig? They grow hair and their tusks develope when they live in the wild. Odd stuff.

Feral pigs taste fine. The taste is nothing like the factory produced pork that most of us eat. It is earthier.

Very cool. I'm really impressed and kinda afraid of you all at the same time. :)
I'd like to have the skills to hunt my food. You never know when that skill will come in handy.

I wonder how much overlap there is between the hunters who believe that they really need to be killing animals for population control and people who believe that any sort of population control for humans is immoral.

American's problems in a nutshell, right there.

Having said that, at least they are eating the thing. I can't imagine that it would taste very good though. Probably was parasite city...

It's far more fair than buying a chicken or cow at the store. You can not be down on hunting and eat store bought meat.
What's the difference? In the grand scheme of things, it takes far more effort to go out, hunt down, kill, clean, slaughter and package your own food than to have some migrant worker do it for you. You think cows in the field want to die any less than deer? At least the deer "might" get away. The cow is born in a far more hopeless and cruel situation by comparison.

EDIT: I read your post wrong laura. Sorry for arguing when we agree...I think.

I don'treally understand fishing either. "Way to go genius! You tricked a fish!"
I went the other day.... The freshest fish you can ever eat are the ones you catch. Ever have fresh trout? Mmmm now thats tasty! Fishing is admitedly kind of boring. But the rewards for a little work are awesome. We ate like kings that night. My father enjoy himself was kind of cool too. Not really hard to understand now is it?

If there is anything my grandfather taught me, it's that fishing isn't about fishing. It's about getting away from your wife and getting drunk.
Nope. We expressly go fishing to catch fish and eat them. When we get enough, we leave. No beer, no lunch, pack in light and get the job done.

I went fishing today in fact, and caught a delicious bass...but I threw it back. Was nice out other than my allergies, that is until my dog came bloody after cutting his chest and paw pretty badly. Probably on a broken beer bottle from some redneck. After a vet visit Im $100 poorer and am sure to lose some more money tomorrow when he returns. :disgust1:

I don't know, but I think most real hunters would look down on these sport hunters. You don't go hunting a deer with a 22, do you? The firepower should be in proportion to the quarry and you should be pretty sure you have a good shot before firing.

The boy shot it eight times and chased it while it was in pain for three hours, why didn't the other people in the party put it out of its misery after the first shot:

He said he shot the huge animal eight times with a .50-caliber revolver and chased it for three hours through hilly woods before finishing it off with a point-blank shot.
...
His father said that, just to be extra safe, he and the guides had high-powered rifles aimed and ready to fire in case the beast with 5-inch tusks decided to charge.

A .50 cal round, even if it were from a muzzle loader, is plenty enough for an animal of that size. Poor marksmanship is at fault here, not choice of weapon.

Agreed. Quite a lot of trash talk being pointed at an 11 yr old. Looks like he's got plenty of quality support in the positive comments section though.
I know Mike is doing a good job of raising and training you to be a responsible young man. I read some of these negative comments from apparently ignorant folks, ( they also probably believe in the big bang and the theory of evolution), so take their comments with a grain of salt and forget it.
