How many people actually work ONLY 40hrs a week?

If you work more than 40, typically how many hours do you work? Do you bring work home with you?
When you go on vacation is there a pile of work for you when you come back?

Typically I am only in the office for 40 hours a week. I rarely take work home. Every once in a while (like, for year end and projects) I need to work extra hours. This weekend is one of those lucky times.

During spring and fall work in the field 126 hr weeks are very common that does taper during late summer depending on how much alfalfa/wheat baling there is. Winter time chores still need to be done with livestock so it is not as if farmers get three months of vacation in the off season either.

I average 40 hours. I also do some work on the bus, so if I work on the bus, I consider it work even if I'm not in the office.

I work from home sometimes, but not as much as I used to because my office isn't that far away.

When I was with big brother, I'd spend 50 - 55 hours in the office. Then I'd do another 10 or so at night and on the weekends. I also typically did some work while on vacation and would spend a good day going through the hundreds if not thousands of e-mails I would have received while I was out.

New job? Not sure yet but it looks like it will be something much closer to 40 hours.

I am barely in the office 40 hours a week. I never take ANY work home with me. Once I walk out that door I'm gone. Once or twice a year I have to work OT for year end close, but I get paid well for it and it's generally less than 10 hours. Not much work piles up when I'm gone, I assign my stuff to people that can do it while I'm away. We have a very good group of peeps here.

In my business if I'm driving home from work and I get a call from a contractor the meter starts ticking. I feel like I get paid for the work but I feel like I'm never really "off"

When my wife was having our baby I was one the phone dealing with stuff from the hospital room. I still feel kind of bad for it and she was understanding for the first couple calls.
I guess why I'm asking is because I've been trying to figure out how to be successful at my job and keep an active family life.

I'm at work about 43 hours a week, but only get paid for about 33 of those. This is why I am seeking new employment. :)

Life involves balance. You recognize the scales are tipped too much, so create boundaries and adjust accordingly.

i mean isn't the whole point of a career the avenue on which to enjoy life. To me personally once a job starts interfering it's time to check the priorities.

I work around 40 hrs. a week, but no one really keeps track of their hours since we're all on salary. Once I'm out the door, the day is over. No email is checked and no one calls to bug me.

I'm on salary, so I'm basically the company's bitch. I work about 50 hrs a week, but still have time for everything I want to do. You just have to be dilligent about the time you allot for things.

First rule of thumb: If your wife is giving birth--leave the phone alone. There isn't anything in the world that can't wait until after.

I worked between 50-60 hours a week in CO.

But I spent most of the time playing with dogs, so it wasn't that hard.

Not including this week I've billed 200 hours since June 24th. I generally float between 100 and 130 hours per pay period. I work from home at 1.5 x rate. There usually is a fair amount of work when I get back from vacation, but it isn't too bad.

40-45 per week. Very rarely do I bring work home. The team I'm on is pretty good about dividing up work, so there's usually not a huge backlog when I return from vacation.

50ish, but around catalog or trade show time it's easily 60+. That's not to mention sales meetings which are all weekends long, so figure another 30+ hours for those weekends.
Interbike is probably 90+.
The last time I worked Sea Otter, and was on hourly, I had 56 hours of overtime for that week. Now I'm salaried, and I'm totally work's bitch...

If I work 45 hours or less, it is a small week.

Usually work around 50 hr. Never bring work home. But they just gave me a VPN router, so that may change. :brow:

I work 40-45 hours a week depending on the work load.
When I leave the office I won't answer my cell phone if its work.
Work can wait till tomorrow. There is no life and death. No contractor works past 5 anyway, so it can wait till tomorrow, if not screw'em. You are not the owner of the company hence you don't live to work you work to live. Remember, if you find yourself working to much say to your self "I work to live not live to work" And get on your bike already and go riding.

It all depends. I run my own small business and I am an independent contractor/sub contractor. Sometimes I'll work 70+ hours a week, on occasion I'll work 100-120 (those weeks suck), but sometimes I'll work 5.

Before I started my own endeavors, I worked at a bike shop, and worked 38 hours a week, paid for 40. No work to take home, nothing waiting for me when I got back if I took time off.... Ahhh the life!

Typically in the office about 40 hours a week, but take home work so total work is usually around 50. If I'm traveling I usually work more - around 55-60.

I used to work 60-80 hours a week. The pay was nice but after 4 years of wasting some prime years of my life I realized if I kept that up all I would have is money and a job, no friends, no hobbies, no life. I'm a reasonably well paid slacker now.

I only been working 40hrs up until last week since my employer is refusing to give me a review that is now 6 months late. Now because of the poor atitude of my office (mainly me) I'll be working 45-50 hrs for the next couple of weeks. Which when I think about it I shouldn't be working ant overtime at all
