I just picked up a 2006 Marin quake AL7 spec'd with a 66 rc2 eta and dhx air (6.8" rear travel). I've read somewhere that the stock build weighs in at 36-37 so with the 66 it is still under 40. I love the pedal-ability of this bike as well as the awesome plushness for dh riding. Crank the fork down with the eta and I'll climb up fire roads with ease. It ripped at Northstar at tahoe the past two weekends. The 1.5" head tube and inter-changable rear dropouts for a 10mm through axle allow it to be built as burly as needed. On pinkbike there's a couple pictures of this frame with a boxxer triple clamp fork :brows: . Definately a contender to the SX. SC nomads area always a good choice as well.

No need looking any further then the SX Trail. I have owned two of them now and have ridden/owned countless others. Really not much that stacks up to it in my opinion. Go and ride as many bikes as you can even if it's just a parking lot test and you will be much better suited to finding a bike that is right for you and what you ride.

Jackal with 66, fr crank and xo derrailleur. Also try getting light aluminum parts and not carbon, because when carbon brakes, you cant notice, so next time you ride it might snap.

I just bought a Norco Six One after months of paralysis-by-analysis, going back and forth between a Commencal Mini DH, IH 6Point, Transition Preston FR, Giant ReignX, etc. I finally just found a deal on the Norco that was too good to pass up and figured it satisfied all my requirements for a trailbike/light freeride bike. 6" seems to get you into the mid-30 lb range, and most bikes with 7" are closer to 40 lbs or more, which is just too much to pedal uphill for me, pussy that I am.

Used Sinister Splinter MX. The bike is just amazing. I've ridden the SXT and a bunch of the other ones listed so far, but nothing touches my Sinister. It is just so perfectly predictable. You know exactly what it is going to do and where it is going to go all the time. I ride in the Vancouver BC area and have never once wished for a bigger bike. Rode Whistler all this weekend, and still did not wish for a bigger bike. Bloody brilliant!

i have read a lot of reviews on the transition dirtbag and most people seem to really love it, but i have also heard that the rear suspension doesnt soak up any bumps at all making it feel more like a hardtail.

I have a yeti asx with a fox 40 and a downhil build, and I still go on cross country rides with it. I have done 12 foot drops on it, and it pedals amazingly well. Sure it isn't your lean mean cross country machine, or some big hit beast, but it does do a lot, and it is fairly well at it.

Remember, whatever frame you pick, and whatever parts you choose, you are almost always compromising.

Best of luck!

Did you actually hear that from someone who rode one? I don't understand how anyone could even say that, unless of course some rookie hack tuned their rear suspension with no clue as to how to do it. You know, like if I was to do it...

yeah, the Dirtbag is super plush, the rear suspension is very active, and with a good rear shock you can tune it to pedal pretty well. the Dirtbag rips, ive owned 2 and loved each one, i had one with a romic and one with a DHX 5 coil and the fox was pimp. i used the bike more for DH and FR, i had a Preston for my XC/AM riding but the Dirtbag can certainly pedal up hill if you want it to.

Okay then, I have heard the same thing about the BR but have also heard it will absolutely rip on flowy singletrack. The DirtBag will eat up gnarly singletrack like nothing, but it can be a workout to pedal up long hills. But hey, who buys a 40 pound bike to pedal uphill?

This guy. My AS-X weights 41 pounds, and I pedal it up, down, and all around.

I pedal my 06 Foes Fly with a 07 66RC2X and Avy DHS in the rear uphill all the time. Its my do all bike. I do 20+ mile XC rides on it all the time.

Personally, I'd stay away from any bike that has been discontinued...
My specialized was discount...it was just becoming out-dated with the new 26" versions coming in so I got it cheap....thats the only way to go when your on a budget.

I like Cove bikes, i pedal my G-spot w/ a single ring, up,down and around ,but mainly Down w/ a shiver on the front and switch to a Stance when I want urban, or trail ride it
