So I'm giving some moderate thought to a career change. I have my degree in computer science and have been in the IT area for all 8 years of my "adult" life. I don't love it, I don't hate it, I'm not rich, but it allows me a pretty decent lifestyle. So all in all, there's no real need to change, but...

The kicker is that I'm a single parent of 2 kids, so I can't exactly leave my job and go back to school full time.

The other kicker is that I'm considering law, which doesn't exactly have a nice, condensed curriculum.

Any thoughts?

I know someone who is looking to make a career change and get out of lawyerin' because it is so boring. It just goes to show you work is work.

Actually, I was thinking more about teaching law, particularly the ethics part of it. Though, perhaps that shows my naivete... ethics in law...

Nam I am
Well I went to school to be an electrical engineer , and after 7 years doing Sort of EE stuff ( Manufacturing support ), I went into IT as a Novell Guy and that Morphed in to Unix and now it is Morphing again into a Unix/network/Winblows support role. But I am still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up.

I was asked that question, "what do you want to be when you grow up " in a interview recently and I promptly replied a Baseball player!

I watched a friend's wife go through Albany Law School (prestigious school) - she was there at times for 16 hours a day. She got accepted then to NYU Law School and he sees even less of her...she is a bit Type A personality, but the school seems very, very intense.

what ever you do as long as you enjoy it you will never work a day in you life. However those bar exams are a pain in the arse.

I picked this book up a few months ago:

Today is my last day here. I'm not making a career change, but I know I will not ever be truly happy here either.

A career change may not solve the problem, but a mindset change might. I'm no hippie, but this book is awesome.

You'd better not. Without the retarded liquor laws Utah officially becomes Mecca. :D
That is the one thing Colorado can hang over the Utard's heads, better beer. I even heard it's against the law to go out of state to buy beer and bring it across state lines. We're going to need an underground railroad.

Change careers, move, do whatever it takes to be happy while you are still young. Once you get old ( like me) you start to become more and more unemployable compared to younger cheaper workers. you also get stuck because you have built up seniority. We have a pention plan and I can retire in 8 more years. I would love to change jobs, but that pension and retirement while I can stilll enjoy it sounds good too!!

I'll be there in October, better start digging that tunnel and finding safe houses now.

Oh, and make a list of beers you'd like to have delivered.

As for the career change, I'm in a different boat, but I currently see no reason to work a job I dislike. Obviously you gotta make the kids a priority, but if you aren't happy at work it is ultimately going to end up affecting them.

I also agree on the mindset change. I recently picked up two books that are making me reconsider my own thoughts on society, work, and the world and I must say it is refreshing.

don't make me kick your ass
After 22 years of snorting toner for a living, I made a career change and now I watch sh!t blow up. I get paid more, with fewer deductions and (at the moment) shorter hours. That and I get to wear jeans and a t-shirt to work instead of a life threatening tie.
