Will rubber wear through Aluminum?

I run my Morewood Izimu in the second slackest position and a fairly meaty tire on the rear. I feel I have the correct spring (450lb, I weigh 180) and the bottom out adjuster on my dhx 5 all the way maxed in addition to fairly high pressure in the shock. I still however get to the bottom of the travel and the tire rubs the seatstay. It has already worn through the paint and left polished raw aluminum showing. I realize that tubing is pretty damn thin, will this eventually wear through? The bike is setup how I want it, but this is nagging at me. Anyone else running an Orange, or a Morewood had this problem alot? I really don't want to change the shock position and steapen the headtube.

My buddy has a huge hole in his Foes on the chainstay from the tire. So I would say yes and quicker than you think.

Towing the party line.
Never seen it on an Orange (huge swingarm), but I have seen it on various hardtails where people have run a huge tire. The knobs WILL wear though the frame, usually faster than you realize.

Try bumping your spring lb up to 500 i would say and re-adjust.

Springs have tolerances so your 450 might be closer to 415-425 in reality

this sounds silly but it's worth a shot if you insist on running that tire.....two options come to mind.....if you can find a different density bottom out bumper, try something more dense (or just thicker) to put on the shaft that way it won't every completely bottom that hard.....

or.....

try putting some clear mylar tape(the thick stuff that moto guys screeen print their logos on the panels on their bikes) on the seat tube....you can buy some at a moto shop....not sure how long it'll last.....you may have to replace it a couple times but it'll protect your frame.....good luck

Good idea on that bumper... I'm trying out a 500 spring and a bit more pressure in the shock as well as a smaller tire in the rear. Should sort it out.

smaller tire will fix it for sure, but the spring and pressure will do nothing......it's still going to get full travel here and there when you bottom.....the rad thing with a different bumper is the bike won't bottom as harshly and you'll rarely feel it bottom....that's the perfect solution....the bumpers on the dhx shocks are like sponges....they are useless.....

Yea, it will still rub as mentioned above when you use full travel. Ian's solution should work well.

Based on what you've said though it still sounds to me like your spring is still underspring a little bit if all of your limits are reached (psi/bottom out control).

Every single Moorewood I have seen in the slack position does this. I just stick some 3M tape on the seat tube and replace it when it wears through.

I'm going to do a combination fix with the bumper and spring. I think it may be a bit undersprung so a 500 should help with how often I am bottoming out. What are people using to add on to the bumper?
well, you'd have to tear the shock apart, but a bumer from avalanche, or maybe from a moto shock will definitely be better and more dense than the sponge that comes on the fox.....might be hard to track down but maybe do some research online.....i think Outer Diameter of the fox shaft is around 1/2" or 12mm....the ID of the bumper doesn't have to be of nasa tolerance either because you can just force it on there.......fox may even have something like that in stock....i've had custom fox rear shocks that had them in the past

did the research for you http://www.mx-tech.com/?id=products&subcat=38

there are an array of bumers here.....just get one that of the 12 or 12.5 mm ones.......if it shows up and is a little too long cut it down some......i had a friend who ran the blue one pictured on a fox shock and loved it....gave his linear bike a slightly more progressive feel, and eliminated the bottoming altogether

good luck.....and if you get one of these bumpers, i'm curious to hear your feedback.....let me know how it goes

i'd rather have a suspension setup correctly to me, then a bigger tire.

get a smaller tire. or some other tire with a lower profile.

please stop being a moron

Thanks for the help Ian. I'll drop by my moto store and see what I can line up and let you know.

DHS:
Comprehension doesn't seem to be a skill of yours. My suspension settings are related to how I ride, the bottoming out and rubbing of tire is what I am trying to fix. So by increasing spring rate, and adding a bumper I hope to improve my ride, not just so I can continue to run the same tire. You act like I am a 16 year old trying to squeeze a Gazza in the back of an IMP. I already said I was switching tires, and the fact that it may be slightly undersprung is a issue I'm addressing. Putting a new bumper on the shock is a good idea as Ian stated, and it won't make the suspension setup "incorrect". Maybe it is you that should stop being a moron.

just remember, even though you put stiffer spring on, unless you shorten the stroke, your still going to have tire rub. WHich with a bumper that is stiffer and les pliable, you are effectivly doing so. As long as it stiff enough to limit that very last bit of stroke.

I realize that, the stiffer spring is just because I think I am a bit undersprung at the moment.

rather than spending 30 bucks on a new bumper, I decided to give the home made job a try. Had some high density foam for motorcycle seats that had adhesive on the back laying around. So I cut out a plug and adhered it to the back of the bumper, looks like it will give the foam about an extra .25" when fully compressed.
