Possibly looking to get a Big Hit as a starter bike but wanna know if its worthy of being a starter DH bike?

It'll be okay, it might be better to get something with a 26" rear wheel though.

I'm sure that if you spent 30 minutes reading through probably 70 threads in the last 5 years that have big hit in the title you'd learn a lot more about a lot of bikes than you will in this one thread. They make great DH bikes, they are relatively low, slack, and have nice short chainstays (while still keeping an amply long wheelbase).
The rest of the story is in setup - I'd suggest a low 8" fork (boxxer) or even a 7" one raised up a bit, and run plenty of sag front and rear (with the rear link in the low setting).
Lowrise bars and low stem to compensate for the long headtube.. and she's apples. The frame is light too so you can build them up relatively light.

BigHits have 26" wheels now. Did last year too.
depends on the year he plans on getting, personally I'd only get a 24" version of the bighit, but thats just because of its slack feel and shorter wheel base.
I own an '05 bighit, I work at a shop...and if I wanted to I could own a Demo for not much more...but I chose not to. Its all about your riding prefferances in the long run.
I bought the bighit as my starter and first full suspension bike 2 years ago, I dont regret anything but not getting a smaller size (I got a large, and I'm 5"10).

I sold my 06 Foes Fly a couple days before I left for Whistler and the Shore last week. I decided to ride my wifes 05 Big Hit. The bike was awesome. I was surprised how well the 24" wheel tracks on skinnies. The bike jumped like crazy too. I like the Big Hit.
I would only recommend a big hit for road riding, commuting, and track racing. 
i would go for a newer one. with the rear 26' wheel.
Udi had a very nice bighit, so I would say his opinion is worth something, not sure about jonkranked's words of wisdom though.
Have you thought about the SXT though? I have one, and after riding fort william the monday just gone (straight after the worlds so CHOPPED OUT) I was very impressed. My last DH bike was a Yeti DH9.

Too new to the Scene to know what a SXT is. Sorry for the lack of knowledge. Could you tell me who makes it so i can check it out?

Very nice bike but im sure one like that would cost alot more than what I an get my Big hit for with nice forks and rear shock too lol. But non the less super clean bike
If you can afford it, the SXtrail is alot better than teh bighit, Big hit is a fairly simple bike. Personally there are alot of other bikes that are better for the money. What size are you looking for, and how much fdo you have to spend??? Might have a really good deal for you
You need to get out your self and ride bikes for yourself. Everyone in forums can tell you what they had what they've ridden, but no one can tell you what fits you.
I have seen guys make competitive downhill runs on cyclocross bikes, it's all about what you feel comfortable on. Most shops will let you test ride their bike in the parking lot, use those opportunities to find what it is you like. And don't get hung up on buying new, most of the time you can find a lot better deal used or online than you could in a shop.

The bighit is an alright bike for DH i use mine for DH and to race. They can be built up fairly light. I have the BETD link on mine which makes a huge diffence over the stock 24 inch rear wheel. But i would say test ride one and figure for yourself what you want.
