So I'll start by saying I'm new here, but not new to bicycling (background in xc mtb, trials, and road biking). And I am buying a freeride bike soon. So I am interested in either the santa cruz jackal or kona shred FRAME (not complete bike). I want to know yall's opinion's are on these frames. I've read somewhere that the jackal frame is kinda on the heavy side, but that might be good for the abuse it will receive...Not so sure about the shred. let me know what you guys think.

thanks guys

you going to be doing lots of dirt jumping? trailriding?

to be honest I do not know much about the shred or jackal but I remember them being dirt jump bikes and not especially suited to trails, compared to bikes like the Transition Vagrant or the Soul Cycles Sluggo

Well I'd go for the Yeti over those but none of the would be very good for street or park. They'd be ok for dirtjumping but there are better bikes out there. You can get a new Giant STP frame for $300.

I dont know... I did see an stp small frame for sale too. I just don't really want one. by "none would be very good for street..." do you mean they suck? or just not as good as the STP?

And how about the STP in dirt? how is it then?

Yep they suck for street and park. Too long and slack. The STP is one of the best multi-purpose hts on the market. It's easily the best in the price range.

STPs have a 14" seat tube. That type of bike is sized by toptube length (short and long). You need a short. The Yeti DJ would be great for dirtjumps. Hence the name. It would be tough to manual and stall and wouldn't be as quick due to the long rearend.

Edit: $200 is a sweet deal though.

I've got a Jackal and tis the best 26in hartail I've owned. Stooopid stiff, strong, and pretty sweet looking too. Its pretty heavy though, so be prepared. You can also order replaceable dropouts from SC if you want horizontal ones to run SS with.
I'm 6'1 and have the short one. Its awesome for jumping but if you plan on hitting some trails get the long.

The mob is nicer than the riot. They have the same geomety. I figured the mob might be a little pricey. You would have gotten better responses in the BMX, DJ forum. The Jackal is a nice dirtjumper. It's old school though. Stable but not as good for tricking. Same with the konas. The 08 konas are a lot better but there are still better bikes. Geometry is everything here.
