Whenever I search for jazz, All I come up with is smooth jazz. I need some funky jazz. I know its out there somewhere!

Any one have any ideas? So far I've found some stuff from Candy Dulfer, some from Isaac Hayes, and some from Donald Byrd.

I need this stuff for work, and I need a fair amount. Any suggestions would be welcomed!

If by "funky jazz" you mean jazz with funk elements, then just about any 70's era fusion might do the trick. Check out Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tony Williams Lifetime, Return To Forever, Billy Cobham, Herbie Hancock...

If by "funky jazz" you mean bizarre jazz, then just about any 70's era fusion should do the trick... IMO...

Edit - David's Madeski, Martin and Wood and Miles Davis suggestions are good. MMW are amazing.

'Nuther edit - Stanley Clark, Jaco Pastorius, and Marcus Miller.

For a start:
Weather Report
Wayne Shorter
Bela Fleck
Brecker Brothers
Steps Ahead
Mike Stern
Jim Beard
Joe Lovano
McCoy Tyner
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Spyro Gyra ("Spirogyra" was an early 70's folk band, definitely not the one you want)
Frank Gambale

MDW is sick. I just found out about Stanley Clark for first time not long ago and he is awesome.

get the herbie hancock Mwandishi sessions 2cd set...great stuff.

also, i've found that there are some really amazing compilations out there. the best probably lean more towards funk than jazz but have both elements. check these series out:

pulp fusion
funk spectrum
dusty fingers

head over to dustygroove.com and start filling your basket.

Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior (haven't listened to other cd's)
Incognito
The funky lowlives(rather funky electronic but nice anyway)
And most of the stuff posted in previous posts.

The best idea is to search by the jazz bass players as they tend to be more funky(well at least it's how I find most of my stuff(or maybe it's because I try to play their stuff? :P ) )

quincy jones did an album with bill cosby (flizzem flazzem JELLO) that is pretty funky and instrumental except for "hickapee" where The Cos sings some gibberish but it is still a pretty cool track.

i'm not sure what constitutes "funky" in your collective books, since i see suggestions all over the map here. :D

in no particular order i'd recommend:

John Zorn / Masada -- but beware, they like noise
Chase -- crazy horn section back in the 70s, going from semi-legit ("Chase") to plain weird ("Pure Music"/"Ennea")

a modern player that i like who may or may not be funky:

Terence Blanchard. monette player. excellent chops. has some boring recordings ("Streetcar...") but find a good one or hear him live...
