We have had to find a new bank because there are no Bank of Americas in Milwaukee. The bank we are dealing with now is a nightmare so I am looking for another. Who do you bank with? do you like them or are they a PITFA?

I bank locally. My g/f had nightmares with WaMu so she switched to BofA and hasn't had many issues.

Bank of Wife. I've got major issues with that bank though. All of my money goes there and it doesn't allow me to make withdrawals without severe penalties.

AVOID WAMU.

We opened an account with them because they were 3 blocks from our house. My wife deposits cash all the time (restaurant tips). They put a three day hold on a CASH DEPOSIT she made because it was a new account. They were quite rude when we were obviously surprised at this.

We canceled the account as soon as they cleared the deposit three days later.

We heard many a horror story about WAMU from friends after that. Total dooshbags when it comes to customer service.

what is WAMU ? Avoid M&I as well. They are being ridiculous about this. The check that I used to open the account cleared my BOA account 7 days ago and they won't give me access to the money yet.

Used to work for Wells Fargo, so they still semi-kiss my butt whenever I have a problem.

Their interest rates are retarded, but if you call and complain about fees they waive them in a heartbeat because they know that you'll just leave and join one of the gazillion mom-and-pop credit unions who have amazing interest rates and great customer service.

If you're having problems, just continue to threaten to leave... that'll get their attention.

How do you like wells fargo. they have branch locations here and online banking and bill pay which we are looking for.
McDonalds of banking IMHO.

Why not a local credit union? We use one, it rocks. They actually know my name when I walk in the door. Good service, easy on the fees, etc.

Most credit unions allow free atm use with other credit unions too.

Caveat - less branches. Can be an inconvenience.

Serious answer though...

We have our joint acount with Peoples Bank in Connecticut and personal savings accounts with a local credit union. We've got no complaints about Peoples, other than the fact that they are a smaller bank, thus fewer locations and fewer ATM's.

I use Chase.

They have the most branches in the Chicago area and ATM fees and usage are free at all Chase branches.

Also free online bill pay and a couple other things. I get a pretty good use of all the services they offer.

we'll be doing direct deposit so location won't really be an issue. Do credit unions do online banking and bill pay. I guess it's probably a case by case basis.

It was for checking only.

They got me checks when I ran out of them.

Outside of that, I didn't care.

USAA for large items, Rivermark Credit Union for local business. Both refund ATM fees and Rivermark has 6.7% interest on the rewards checking account.

I never have to worry about ATM fees again.

Both of the ones I belong to do. I have my paycheck direct deposited to 2 different credit unions, and have online bill pay setup at one. No more buying stamps and envelops and relying on the USPS. Online bill paying is one of the best things ever.

I use the credit union debit cards for at least 90% of my purchases, and if I need cash, I just get $60 back at the grocery store. Once in a while, if i really need cash for something, I just pay the $2 fee at another bank's ATM. I only have to do this maybe 2-3 times a year.

Also, my credit union has better rates than most banks and gave an extra 1/2 % off the auto loan because I make the payment to them electronically.

Wells Fargo and a local CU. When I move to CA I will move all my stuff to a CU...So much better. And yes, Wells Fargo interest rates are RETARDED. They turned me down for a %12 auto loan...turned to a local CU and they gave me one at %5. My student Visa through them has something like a 21% APR...Thank god for the AMEX. :D

I with a local credit union.. San Diego County Credit Union. Haven't had any problems aside from lack of locations, but I don't get charged any weird fees if I withdraw from other credit union branches/ATM's. I went to my local Better Business Bureau and had them give me a list of most reputable credit unions.

I've been with Wells since they were 1st Interstate, over 25 years.

I will second the comment that if you whine a little they waive a lot of fees. We just do straight banking with them, no loans or investments. My local branch knows me by name, and they have really gone to bat for us a few times.

OTOH, they all suck.

I'll agree with that we have had issues with mystery charges and WAMU basically told us to figure it out ourselves?? Now I bank with RBC....but that's not really an option unless you live in Canada...D
