Michelin bead failure

I just got a new 2.8 DH32 michelin tire on the front. I was running it at 30psi using a tube, I might do tubeless next year, and was running it with sun doublewide rims.

I hit a drainage gulley and the bead blew out on me and then I rode with a section of the bead out for a good 50 feet. It was the second run of the day.

Anyway at the bottom of the mountain I set the bead by hand and then pumped it up and the bead blew out from pumping it up. It seems that now the bead is stretched too much. The tire is done.

Is it the rims that could have caused it?

it may or may not be the rims fault, but either way, you should be running double wides.:p

i have had this happen on 823 rims also. they were with 2.5 comp 16s. don't really know what caused it since it was ran tubeless so the bead was poped well.

i have had this happen alot on maxxis tires and stop sign rims tho, once the bead can sit properly, the tire can be forced of the rim quite easy in hard corners and once its off, it cant be used anymore, the bead get stretched.

It is definitely the rim my friend. That rolled lip won't hold any tire bead once blown out, except a Michelin DH Mud(super tight bead).

Here is what I mean. Look at the DoubleTRACK inner profile...see how much room there is for the bead to seat. Not many rims are done the way of the one above:

With the doubleWIDE, you get less chance of a pinch flat...but once the rim is the least bit dinged, most tires are going to pop off the bead of it. I had the same problem on a bike running Singlewides with that same profile.

Just sent you a PM with a Name and # of someone to call at Michelin that maybe able to help you out. I would try that first. They are good about taking care of riders on thier tires.

Butch is right here. If you have messed up your rim (DW or SW Sun Rim) at all then the tire will not hold on well where the damage is. Those rims don't have much for the bead to grab hold of anyway even when they are in good shape.

That, and Michies are pretty damn gooey, I'd say get it on a good rim and you'll be just fine.
EDIT: The tire is junk, I've been thinking about it. No good. I'll give you $10 for it.

The same thing happened to me at Mount Snow this year. I was running comp 32's front and rear and the rear one blew off the rim (ex729) during a run. When I went to put it back on, the bead was obviously stretched out so much there was no way it would go back on. One of the guys I was there with said it had happened to him before with the same tire on a singletrack.

In the 03 and 04 race seasons I ran Michelin, but I had two front tire beads 'let go' on separate occasions, both at decent speeds. Dangerous business. I've sworn them off since then. The first bead seemed to have stretched, while on the second tire it actually separated. Anyway, if the tire you are talking about is like either of mine were, you can't use it anymore.
