i cant believe that all they were hiding was a derailur in a box.....
that's been common knowledge for more than 2 years, honda put out videos of that thing a long time ago; and better ones too.

i was hoping the g-cross team was on something slightly different, but they weren't.

But hasn't this been common knowledge for a while...?

I thought everyone knew this already... The original gearbox for the RN01 back in 04' was a CVT that was shrouded in a lot of mystery, but HRC ditched that because it was heavy, complicated, and a pain to maintain... MBA had a rough schematic of it - had some pretty insane reciprocating push-rods... they acted in the way you could stand on your pedals in a level postion and rock them forward and backward to propel the bike... the CVT did this many times per revolution however... can't remember much else.

They ditched the CVT in late 04' in favor of the "derailleur in a box" set-up...

Now the CVT would be something I'd like to take a peek at...

EDIT: Interesting - Minaar was only running a 6-spd cassette inside... Hmmm...

Looks simpler than what I expected.

I still like it though since it is enclosed. I would think that would mean less chance of mangled derailleurs and hangers. Seems cool to me... I wish my bike had one.:busted:

They went through 3 different designs for their gearbox. The first and most secretive was a setup similar to a Rohloff. The other two were just derailleurs. One of the mags had pictures of all of them a year or so ago.

To hell with that video! Check that freakin' Interleithen VIDEO!

Not quite halfway through, some kid in a class called "Youth" monster whips an air to flat like it's nothing...in a side skid no less.
Then Ben Reid moto-scrubbing the doubles!!! That's what I'm talking about!!!

Fakk the gearbox...it's history.

i hope bcd would chip in here, i remember him saying that he couldn't get his cog box to shift fast enough, but honda's system is a basic as a gearbox goes, and i am sure they wouldn't tolerate slow shifting.

Simple, low maintenance, probably could be made for reasonable price, no rear mech issues, central weight...
Who holds the patents for it? Can you really patent a mech in a box?

Its not to flat, its actually a big hip jump, just looks flat on the video. The kid is Danny Hart, rides for Troy Lee. Has been around for years, he finished only a few seconds behind Gee Atherton and Marc Beaumont. Think he is sixteen, will be a junior next year. He is unreal to watch, he is like that everywhere!

In a healthy tension
dude. i hope we're doing better than that. i want my flying car by then. and robots that will do all my work while i live a life of leisure.
Leisure is overrated, find a job you like. Have you ever been on a cruise? Craziness...old retirees eating and drinking to glutoness proportions...I love my job.

Just heard he is racing world cups next year and is leaving Balfa for a new sponsor.

if the main sprocket that comes from the cranks is small I.E. not causing
a ratio change to spin the cassette faster, it will shift slow.

looks to me like they use as big of one they can fit in there, it moves when the rear der shifts to keep a somewhat straight chain line.

i call them DIAB's

Does this mean all that basic/similar cog box technology stuff is already patented by Honda and any close variation will be subject to prosecution, like BCD's design, which I though had a good future.

bcd, wont the italian design have the same problems with shifting then? since the biggest gear on the cassette attached to the would be around 25t? they could use a 32 or 34, but honda looks like they are using a 40 ish size chain ring.

you have no more interest with DIAB's?

this system might be slow shifting, but, i know this seems like to much,
but if you ran a 3rd chain that has all your ratio change from bb to a
"phaser" then you would spin it a a quick shift speed.

mine had 1tooth gap per shift on cassettes and only 5 cogs. it could
be made much smaller and lighter with Ti off the shelf cogs.

no, i am working with the alfine hub this year. its "availible", uses a
triger shifter, no DHer wants a grip shift. and affordable. that is THE
only way we will start to see the masses use gearbox's

yea, i was thinking about 3rd chain to speed up the cassette for shifting. but it seems like its not needed from honda.

alfine, is that a shimano gearbox? and trigger shifter? wow, i didn't know about that.

could you post some pics of your prototype? was it used on a bike too?
