The Incident Commander in charge of the fires in San Diego just called for 150 strike teams. There's 5 engines in a strike time. That's 750 fire engines just for San Diego alone! That's more engines than LA City and LA County Fire combined, and they're the two largest fire departments in the state! Resources are seriously tapped.
be safe Paul....D

THAT IS F'ING INTENSE!!!!!!

A friend of mine who fights fire for the forest service (and is there right now) makes fun of those foil suits. The odds of you surviving a fire, even with one of those, are very slim.

wow.. that's one of those "speachless" images... amazing!

yah, as Biscuit said... the chances of survival, even in one of those suits.... damn

haven't heard any recent updates regarding the fire that resurged near my pad (the one near Hernandez Hidaway...north side of hodges). i'm still about a mile away.... i took a drive to see how close i could get to my pad.. i ended up getting to my place w/ no problem. the entire community is "suppose" to be evacuated still.. but there were people at home, stores were open... hmmm... i discussed w/ my father. we're not going back until we get the official word that it's ok to do so. although there's a 0.00000001% chance that we'd be in any danger, i just wouldn't want to take any chances, or get in the way of any emergency crew.

good luck to everyone involved w/ this! my prayers go out to ya regardless how in danger you or your property are in!

Tuesday Update

We've been watching the skies all day, praying and hoping.

Around noon, the winds turned back to the east, and aircraft were able to come in and dump water and fire retardant on Mt Miguel. Within a few hours, the fire had been turned back to the east, and was no longer creeping westward towards us. About 1 hour ago, all mandatory and voluntary evacuations for Chula Vista (immediately to our south) were been lifted.

While we are safe, and it looks like we will not have to evacuate, I'm staying packed till Thursday when the Santa Ana winds are expected to stop. Authorities expect containment of the Harris fire (that was most threatening us) by Nov 3. It seems really odd to be relieved, while at the same time remembering that at least 8 fires are still burning in San Diego County, will continue to burn for another week, and people are still being evacuated from other areas. At this time, there are almost 550,000 people who have been evacuated around the county, and over 1000 homes destroyed. Yet people remain upbeat, and volunteers and supplies continue to be offered at the various shelters around the county. This is such a great community of people - I'm really encouraged to see so much community spirit and cohesion.

I someone ask me WHY so many fires started at once. Good question. It's a combination of things, but mainly has to do with the extremely dry conditions, the humidity being down around 6% in places, and the hot Santa Ana winds blowing from the east. Those conditions make the atmosphere so volatile, it doesn't really take much for fires to start. It happened very quickly, and all over SoCal.

Please continue to pray for calm winds, a rise in the humidity, and cooler temperatures.

And your emergency crews appreciate that :D

It's been a hectic couple of days here, but I'm glad to hear that many of our SoCal monkeys are safe and sound.

Orven and I woke up to a light dusting of ash on our cars, but our house seems to be safe.

Looking out over SD from downtown before getting to work.

The smoke blowing out over the bay

And the sun setting over the ocean tonight

Take care SoCal monkeys!

I just got home today, well late last night actually, all safe and sound. It was quite a weekend. I'll post a few pictures when I get a chance.

BTW, fires not withstanding, why is it that somewhere between 1 and 3 and 1 and 2 people I encountered in my travels around San Diego was a homeless, stark-raving lunatic? I have never, in all my days, met so many crazy homeless people in such a short period of time. Wow!

I fought fire for a summer w/ the forest service back in '03. That was my worst fear. They told us you would get burned, but it would keep your airway from burning. Just doing the practice drills spooked me.

nice pics Shrymp. glad they are getting in control of things. it was pretty scary on the news, when they just showed only 1% of the fire is contained over and over again.

The Witch and Poomacha fires have combined to form a 200,000-acre blaze, with hot spots heading east towards Julian, north to Palomar Mountain and northeast into the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, according to the San DiegoCounty Office of Emergency Services.

So now we have Witchy-Poo...
