hey wassup? i currently live in ga and pretty much hate it. absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to ride or snowboard. I do landscaping for a living and heard that spokane is a good spot for it. also sounds like they have good DH/freeride and snowboarding.

anyone have any input? biggest thing is i gotta be able to make a living doing landscaping.

Ballard 4 life.
I lived in Spokane for a year. Yeah, the biking is good, and I hear the snowboarding is good too, but I could only take so much of living in a city with no shore or waterfront.

five ski areas within 70 miles, day passes range from $27 to 55. Powder triangle of BC is just over the border.

Riding in town ranges from buff easy singletrack at Riverside to the expert stuff at Beacon. We're building a bike park at Beacon.

Can't speak about your career choice other than every landscaper designer/architect I know is working.

West side of the Cascades has all of the issues of too many people occupying too little space and too many tree-huggers trying to tell everyone else how to live and how to recreate.

But they can all stay over there for sure. Don't need iny more Washafornians east of the mountains. But we'll make room for a Georgian ;) I escaped the wet side over 30 years ago and never looked back.

Bellingham is beautiful but the cost of real estate is high and hippies are in charge.

Spokane is a working class city, and also has quite a college population, it's great for younger people trying to get a start because the cost of living is not that bad and there's quite a variety of different places to work, and education potential.

The bike riding is more XC, and freeride, the downhill course is more like a freeride course, although we're close to Silver Mtn, and Schweitzer that both have excellent DHing.

Mtn. Spokane is really fun for snowsports and I hear 49 degrees north is also sweet, Schweitzer again, is really pretty near.

Bike of choice is something in the middle, light for climbing, although burly for the descents.

Bar scene is great, there's a bar for everything, if you're a weirdo, lone wolf, dancer, or just heavy drinker.

I live here and have lots of fun! Join us.

you'll fit in perfect with that, but if you don't have a gun rack in it you may consider adding one before you move

Spokane Rocks!

I escaped Seattle 2 years ago and finally made it home, I love it here.

Landscaping may be a bit rough. Our winters are harsh, you'll go a month or more in the single digits at times. I think we had snow on the ground for almost three months last winter? Dunno, during the other 9 months of the year you will have more then enough to keep you busy. If you are a border or a skier you could grab a ski patrol job or instroctor position at one of the numerous hills in the areato pass the winter.

Biking is great. You have some of the greatest single track in Washington within an hours drive (shuttleable too). Silver is a good distraction with lift access. Plus you have Beacon right in town which is perfect for your afternoon or early morning fix. Whistler is only 8 hours away so it isnt to daunting for a long weekend trip.

If you are a paddler we have some of the best play boating in the state running right through the middle of town. You can find something at all levels. Plus with the whitewater park in the works the boating is going to be even better.

Skiing/bording is incredible. For lift access you have several mountains within a short drive. Backcountry skiing is the best in the northwest. As mentioned early, if you travel just a bit north you run into whitewater. They average over 600 inches of snowfall a year!

Spokane is a slower pace of life then Seattle. We are big enough that we have luxurys like the Symphony and the opera, but we arent so busy it will take you two hours of fighting traffic to get home after a ball game.

Like I said, I love it here.

Seattle
I've lived in Spokane, grew up there and still drive over every other month to see the parents. I've also worked landscaping there, I did sprinkler systems for a "season". And that's exactly the problem with Spokane landscaping. I was just doing it as a summer job during college, but all the "professional" landscapers went on unemployment every winter. Not sure if that appeals to you or not, but the guys I knew didn't really like it. As far as year round outdoor recreation goes, Spokane is pretty f'in awsome. Great biking, and better skiing/snowboarding than the west side of the state in my opinion. The other nice thing about Spokane is the traffic. Basically, there isn't any. Spokane was recently rated as the best city in the ENTIRE COUNTRY for yearly commuting times, while Seattle was in the top 5 worst cities. Take your pick. If I could make my Seattle salary back home in Spokane, I'd be there within a week.

...but all the "professional" landscapers went on unemployment every winter.
Or they bought Meyer plows for their pickups thinking they were going to make money moving snow all winter. Then you get three mild winters in a row and that blows that idea.

Wish guys still did that a lot. I need a new plow and I'm looking for a deal :D

Anyway, Henry and bills: shuttup! It's terrible here! Winters are 4 months long, summers are bone dry and the riding sucks! Our four seasons are snow, mud, dust and wildfire. We only have two downhill courses inside the city limits on park property with year-round access and after all; and the other trails breed like rabbits. Gonna get so bad you could ride for days trying to find a way out. Naw, best not to come to Spokane.
