i suppose i should jsut call godaddy, but figured someone might be able to help me out.

ok, i've got the ftp address, username, and password, but i can't connect via any of the free FTP clients (goFTP, smartFTP)...what the hell am i doing wrong?

Do you use Firefox?

FireFTP is the shiz.


Make sure you are putting in the host address correctly.

example: ftp.narlusrocksyourass.com


Also, most FTP accounts need to be properly enabled on the server side first (via your web host control panel, settings page, web interface deely ma jig, etc)

i bet they have ftp turned off (as it's insecure) and have sftp or scp enabled instead. try using a sftp-capable client. i have no idea what's out there and free for windows, unfortunately, although you could use puttyssh if you're brave and handy with the command line :D

actually, this is kind of a dumb question, but i should go w/ my strengths and ask it...

i'm assuming that w/ the storage godaddy gives me w/ my account, that i can have a folder called 'misc music' and stuff mp3s in there, to be linked to for Song of the Day.

that should work, right?

i guess i should try it out.

Yes, that's no problem. Just be aware that it probably violates their terms of service so if it ends up attracting attention you might end up with a suspended account or something.

What exactly are you trying to do, and what kind of account do you have?

If I wanted to place a file on my website, i'd stick it in the folder on my account labeled "public_html" or something like that and then link to it like:

mykickasswebsiteexample.com/musicfileofdoom.mp3

YMMV

I've actually been pretty happy just using windows explorer (not internet explorer) just type ftp://yourwebsite.com into the address bar and fill in your user name and password in the popup then drag and drop just like you were moving files on a local drive.

I've always had pretty unsophisticated web sites and only use my ISP as a host.
