Any Upstate/Rochester NYers?

A frien of mine recently called regarding a possible employment change from CA to Rochester NY. He is originally from Utah so at least he has some experience with snow. I am not too familiar with that area so I really was of no help.

I am kind of looking for some input regarding the community, what to expect as far as buying a home (He claims that he researched the average income-36k, and average home cost-113K), and anything else that you would think of as pertinent info.

Unfortunately he doesn't ride, so that scene is not that important. I think he is getting low balled with a 55k offer but the employer justifies it with the low cost of living claim.

Any info that I could pass along I would greatly appreciate.

One person can live on 55k pretty easily in Rochester. For a family he would probably need a second source of income in the household. I would say 55k is below the median for engineering jobs, of course you gave no indication of what kind of job it was or how much experience your friend has, so can't help you there. Houses in bad parts of the city can be really cheap, like 30k (but in some better areas can be upwards of 200-300k). You can get a decent place in a decent suburb for around 100k-150k. You can also spend 500k if you want, of course.

He is a prosthetist with a few years of experience. I was going to mention that but I figured most people are not to familiar with the profession or expected incomes. Even within the industry salaries vary quite a bit. I started as a resident at that amount, but I also work for a pretty progressive/reputable company.

A certified prosthetist? I suppose that salary sounds like something that would be offered in this town. Not a great offer but not a bad one.

Working downtown can suck traffic-wise, but then again if he's coming from California, he probably wouldn't even notice the traffic people around here complain about.

What are taxes like around Rochester? A friend of mine was thinking about moving back to western NY because housing costs half as much. But when he included property taxes it ended up being cheaper to stay here.

I'm in one of the mid-to-better suburbs and my school and property taxes add up to about 2500 per year. You can pay 10k in taxes in some of the high end suburbs, and you can pay very low taxes in the crap parts of the city.

Yes, he is a CP as of recently. I did tell him to research the property taxes as well. Here in NH that was a very important piece of the puzzle when bugeting. If I moved one town over my taxes would jump 7 cents/k.

Overall what is the weather like as well as the country side or nature of the surounding area?

Great Minor League sports if you are into that. RedWings, Amerks, Soccer too methinks.

Great State Parks within driving distance - especially Letchworth State Park.

Not too far a drive for major league sports either in Buffalo (Sabres and Bills).

And good chicken wings too!

Tell him to prepare for Lake Effect Snow, Pops, white hots, and Garbage Plates from Nick Tahous!
there are better places to get garbage plates. MUCH better.

and you'll have access to the best grocery stores around.... WEGMANS.

For good wings... go to Acme.

The Sabres just dumped the Amerks, so who knows what will happen to them now.

The weather is pretty much standard northeast, but we get the added joy of "lake effect snow" which can dump a pretty good load in a pretty short time.

It's nice in the summer, sometimes gets pretty hot, but overall good.

There's the Finger Lakes region within an hour's drive which has lots of wine tasting and other various outdoor stuff.

Downtown Rochester has a couple areas that are pretty happening for nightlife, generally the 20-30 crowd.

As Mr. Kranked noted, we have Wegmans, which you have to experience to appreciate.

There are parks all around, none of which allow biking, but he doesn't ride so he won't care.

Que? Ya'll tell another northeast transplant what the hell a "garbage plate" is, eh?

It is pretty much a Rochester thing I think.

Do a Google Image search and you should get a sense of it. Tates a lot better at around 2 a.m. after a night out on the town.

I used to work in the plant that made the hot dogs for the Nick Tahou's Garbage Plates and one of the Tahou Family members lived across the street from my home in Chili, NY (pronounced with long Is)

A visual:

And one with red hots instead of burgers:

In this photo you can see a couple of pats of butter - in addition to all that food on the plate you get a 16oz soda (or Pop as it is called in Rochester) and a couple of thick slices of some hearty Italian Bread (it might be a day old - you never know). I think the bread helps absorb some of the grease from the burgers, hots, hot sauce etc. - but I don't think that has ever been proven through any scientific studies. ;)

My favorite was a cheeseburger plate from the Nick's on Lyell Avenue.

They are good and yes they do produce quality bathroom time - it helps if you have a newspaper or magazine to peruse while you sit on the throne post garbage plate consumption.

wegman's blows stop and shaup and shawuh's out of the water, by far, and then some.

prices are lower than the hippie stores too, like whole foods and whatever, but the quality is the same.

Weather is very temperate. Winters can get very cold and snowy and summers can be hot and dry. It rains, and it's actually rain, not the mist you get by the coast.

Life moves at a slower pace, but it's not quite the south.

I don't know if I would relocate unless I thought the offer was great. I love the area, and hope to move back, but, at least for Syracuse, if you lose that job, options are pretty limited. I like Syracuse much better than Boston, but if I lose my job here, I might be able to get another in a couple weeks.

Dear god, I have to try one of those.

Any good suggestions on getting poutine around CT without driving up to Canuckistania?

And every time you shop at Wegmans, just picture Danny Wegman in his mansion in the Finger Lakes with a mountain of coke on his desk, not unlike Tony Montana at the end of Scarface.

Upsides are the cheap housing market, downside I think can be the weather. Its not always the snow that gets me, its just the greys but after living in syracuse for 4 years which literally had 2 week spans where I dont recall seeing the sun once it doesnt seem quite so bad.

Oh man... I can remember waking up some mornings (usually around noon) not being able to remember much from the night before, but the feeling in my stomach would remind me that I had hit Nick's sometime around 3am. That was the good old days before they started closing the one that was in the middle of the ghetto at 8pm (still the case?).

Damn.

Now I want a garbage plate again. DHS said he would bring me one down from Rochester last year, but it's just not the same...
