Transition Vagrant is a nice choice...I have parts on order to rebuild mine up as a DH bike...Nothing can ever top an imperial if you can get your hands on one.

Id advocate my Imperial as a DHable all rounder til the cows came home. Its strong as hell, adjustable wheelbase and massive tyre clearance. You cant go wrong.

Is the Imperial still being produced? I had one and loved it for DH. Back in the day of 3" Gazzis, 24" wheels, and Monster Ts, though.

The nice thing about a HT is they are very simple. For a HT, find one with a geo that fits you and a bike that excites you and you'll be set. What kinda fork you thinking about using?

I'm currently riding a Banshee Morphine with a 888VF2.
I ride in very, very rocky terrain (South Mountain in Phx, AZ) and I've been having a blast.
I'm definitely picking better lines than I used to and after a few runs, I'm not that much slower than the guys on the F/S rigs.

I belive the Revell might have too steep HA, I would choose a 4x frame as their HA is usually fairly slack. But if you're looking at steel frames, don't forget .243 . I would choose a lighter frame than an Evil Imperial. Go light, it's much more fun! Norco still has a dh-specific HT line I belive.

Imperials are no longer in production..from what I know they are getting a geometry tweak and will be in production again in a few years...I had a Sluggo at one point and it just felt to stretched out for me compared to my imperial. Maybe I am just crazy but I will always have an Imp in my stable.

Imperial was one of the greatest frames I've ever had the privilege of owning. I've ridden both Diablo and Snowshow on it and the frame always laughed and asked for more. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I had the funds

I really liked my Vagrant with a 66 up front. Solid, lowish, semi-slack, and railed corners like there was no tomorrow. But I didn't race it down hill. Just a really heavy trail bike that was super comfortable when pointed downhill.

I had a Steelhead setup with a z150 and 2.5" weirwolfs for a while. It was a blast to ride downhill. It was slack and stable, though I never measured the HA. It was also possible to adjust the wheelbase by 1/2" or so with the horizontal dropouts. The thing I remember most about it was how ridiculously fun it was when pointed downhill. So that's my recommendation for a budget build.
