This is pretty timely for me. I'm 35 and got my first pair of glasses when I was 5. I started wearing contacts 20 years ago. In the last several months, my eyes just decided to reject the lenses. My glasses are like coke bottles. Besides glasses just suck all the way around. I can hardly walk around without my glasses on...

Anyway, I'm getting Lasik in 8 days in Buffalo. I thought about going over the border, but don't like the idea of finding the cheapest way to fix my eyes.

I can't wait. Mine is $1500.00 per eye without the 15% VSP discount.
DEFINITELY go to a doctor with a great reputation and lots of experience! This is one area where saving money is not a good idea. Also, $1500 before a discount is amazing. Mine were $1900 per eye.

Good luck and you have nothing medically to worry about. Keep your emotions under control when they start working and just know that it's quick, painless, and really not a big deal. Or maybe you aren't worried about it as I was?

Have mints in your pocket as the worst part of it all is the fvcking medicine leaking from your eyes into your mouth... nasty! It's like putting a few drops of bike lube on your tongue.

What's your vision? Mine was about -9 for each contact lens. And like you, been wearing glasses since I was a kid, contacts since teenage, and am now 39yo.

Just to clear up any misconceptions, I got my Lasik in Niagara Falls, both eyes for under $900. The doctor who did my surgery has performed over 40,000 Lasik procedures and never had a single problem. He has written books on Lasik and gives lectures at schools of optometry. He is one of the world's leading authorities on Lasik.

Just because it's cheap doesn't mean some loser is going to be hacking at your eyes with a machete. Some Lasik centers have just figured out the economics of volume production a little better than others.

What pisses me off most about this is that I broke my Scaphoid in August and had to re-learn how to put in and take out my lenses with one hand. I wish I had gotten the surgery before that.

I did a lot of research on it and talked to a lot of people. I don't have any concern about the capabilities/ reputation of the doctor. He's done thousands of these.

Your description of going completely blind for a second is a little freaky. My vision is -8.0 and -8.5.

I have never been so excited about surgery...no more:
Saline Sol'n
scratched lenses
lenses popping out of glasses
conjunctivitis from contacts
knocking my glasses under the bed trying to get them at night, then searching around by feel
cleaning dirty glasses
contacts getting bumped out of my eye or rolling back into my head
putting my fingers in my eyeballs

When were you able to drive again?

I figured as much, I live in Buffalo and know a lot of people that went over to get it done. I never heard anyone having an issue either. The convenience of having it right here is important as I have a tough time scheduling things outdside of work and only have one person to give me a ride back home.

Yeah I'm in Rochester so it was only like an hour to get there for my appointments. I saved about $4100 by going to Niagara Falls. That was about 5-6 years ago though, I don't think the savings are that dramatic these days.

Sorry, didn't mean to freak you out about the "blind" part. I'm sure the retina was simply overwhelmed for a moment and shut down. I hear it happens to nearly everyone. However, the after-effects of that temporary blindness was so focking cool! Try to enjoy those little moments... I felt one with the universe for a second :)

I got the procedure at 8:45am yesterday morning and drove myself to the follow-up appoint at 8am this morning. I bet I could've driven last night, but was more tired than anything.

Eventho my eyes are still healing and dealing with the drops, my vision is almost as good as my corrected vision was. It really is amazing.

make sure you have mints with you as the medicine leaking into your mouth really is the worst part!

Congrats Opie, you have entered a new world.

I still remember that feeling the first time I looked through my new eyes. I was one of the coolest moments in my life, and I've had some pretty damn cool moments.

Thanks bro! This morning I reached for my glasses and was like, "fock, where are they now?" I started searching for them on the floor until I realized I could see carpet fibers.

$3,800....

<whistles>

i think i'll keep the contacts (nominal yearly fee $200 or so) and spend that cash on a 1D mkIII....
I could've done the $900/eye route, but I've heard good things about the custom wavemapping and laser vs blade and sincemy corneas were borderline thickness for bladed, it seemed like a one time shot. Now, if I need another procedure, I still have enough material to work with.

For those who can get away with the less expensive procedure, awesome.

Fantastic! I go in for PRK in a couple of hours, I'm hoping that in about a week I'll have that sort of vision.

Good luck!
(not that you'll need it :))
Well..I'm done. My eyes hurt, and my vision is still fuzzy, although I wonder if it isn't in part due to the contact lens "bandages. My left eye in particular is dry and sore. The doctor says 5-19 days for the healing process to get rid of most the fuzz. I can see a lot better than I could without glasses before, but it isn't anything like the nearly instant change you see in LASIK.

Hey bro! Glad it went well!

I was told three weeks for total healing. *shrug*

Be vigilant with the eyedrops your doctor told you to take. I assume:
- anti-inflamatory
- anti-biotic
- lubricating
?

Wear your goggles, just smack your woman's ass when she teases you about it.

Front Range, dude...
Got it done this morning...pretty bizarre experience. Still fuzzy, same spiel everyone else got. Gotta hang in SA for another 5 days for post op checks. Now, I get to do my third or fourth favorite thing...sleep!

yes, yes it was.

I wasn't happy, just satisfied, that i got it done as it didn't really change my life. Except now that I'm up every few hours with my newborn, I'm super glad I did it.
