It looks like we're going to be building up a new DH bike for my girlfriend this season. She's gotten much faster in the last year, and needs a bike that can keep up with her. I've put together a rough idea of her bike, taking into account sponsors and the fact that deep down, we're cheap. I've never really done a build of all new parts before, and I'm not so up on the latest and greatest, so any input you guys have on what I could do better is always appreciated. For reference, she's about 5'9" and 140lbs give or take and is going to be trying to really step up her dh racing this year.

Frame: Med Intense SOCOM
Rear shock: Fox DHX 5.0 Coil
Fork: Marzocchi 66 rcx2 (off old bike)
Headset: Sunline V-One DH
Stem: Sunline V-One
Bars: Sunline V-One
Grips: Some sort of lock ons
Brakes: Avid Juicy 7 w/ 185mm rotors
Wheels: Azonic Outlaws 150mm spacing
Cranks/BB: FSA Gravity Lites
Pedals: Not sure yet
Chain Guide: Ethirteen lg-1
Seatpost: Azonic HD-1
Seat: Sunline V-One
Front Ring: ethirteen 38t
Rear Cassette: sram 970 dh 11-26
Shifter/rear der: Sram x-9 short cage
Tires: 2.7 Minion dhf front, 2.5 High roller rear

What would you do differently? Am I missing anything? And most importantly, what color should everything be?

Interesting choice of brakes; You're only going to give her 7" in the rear?

The only thing I might switch up would be going to a 36t front ring if you're going to run the PG 970. Also, I would suggest going to just a cheap road cassette instead if you want to keep some weight down. I have one and I've got no complaints, but it's a pig. The two biggest cogs are solid!

Gearing is a personal thing, so run whatever works. What gearing is she on now? I would also suggest going with a road cluster, rather than the DH specific monstrosity

Good points, I have no knowledge of road cassettes or what is cheap-o crap that will break and what isnt. What's a good cassette to run?

I'm thinking maybe a 36t instead

The things that stand out are the wheels and the 2.7 tire, I think the tire is overkill, 2.5 should be fine across the board. For the wheels, maybe something a little lighter, make the bike a little more nimble where the weight will be noticed..... Otherwise, cool!

How about 135 rear dropout and wheel. 2.5 tires with single ply front and XT cranks. That will save a bunch of weight and still be burly, she's only 140lbs. Better let her pick the color. 34 tooth ring, I second the "spin to win" comment. And I have a 66 and it weighs more than a boxxer, the new air version would be nice but run what ya got.

I'm not sure how important it is to you or if anyone else has had the same experience but a friend of mine is running a Sunline Headset. He despises it.

It works fine but if you ever need to swap the fork or anything like that there is an upper conical washer (like on old school Aheadsets or that's what I got from his description of it) that is a SUPER tight fit. It's mentioned on their site as a "feature" to keep the headset from loosening up on you but seems like it might be a double edged sword. He said it took him an hour to find a way to get the thing out b/c once you have the headset snugged down, the top of the washer is almost flush with the top race so there isn't any room to grab or pry it.

I was looking at the outlaws mainly because we can get a really good deal on them.

The 2.7 minion is also left over from her old bike, and she was stoked on its size way back when she first started, a 2.5 will probably be just as comfortable now that she's gotten better, but the cheapskates in us won't let us throw a tire out until it's used up :D

hmm, hadn't really thought of an air shock out back. Maybe I should...
