Living the dream.
Inspired my manimal's thread and the responses to it here: thread I decided to create this little poll. I don't care what you've done in the past, how often or if you've never touched the stuff. Are you currently a regular pot smoker or not and do you think that manimal did the right thing regardless of what happens to the kid(s) involved?

Not current.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for someone who puts their family in that position, and is brilliant enough to publicly post photos of not only smoking, but growing and distributing illegal drugs.

I don't really see much of a difference between being caught because you were a douchebag to the wrong guy, or being caught because of a drug investigation. Would everyone still feel bad if he harassed a guy on the street corner while holding a joint, and the guy happened to be an undercover cop & busted him?

I'm all for Oregon laws for personal use for medicine (or not), but that was obviously NOT for personal use and he is a jackass for posting pictures of it on MySpace in the first place.

You can't fix stupid.

<edit> I don't smoke, but I support laws that allow others to.

Incidentally, I would be for legalization of marijuana.

I'm not against the drug, but since it IS illegal, you need to make your choices accordingly. Putting your family in harm's way by producing and distributing drugs, then bragging about it with photos for the world to see is not a good choice.

Part of me feels for the kid, but that doesn't mean mom and dad shouldn't be held accountible for their actions. I don't have any kids. Does that mean my punishment should be more severe if I was dumb enough to get caught doing this?

Smoking a joint in public is illegal and somewhat related to the bigger activity. Acting like an illiterate moron on the internet and having a cop get annoyed by that when it's something completely unrelated to the job is different in my mind. Manimal happens to be a cop and can pull some strings because he got pissed off at something that happened to him personally, not related in any way to the duties he performs on the job. I'm sure it's not the first time it's happened but I do see a difference.

What about getting pulled over for failing to yield, mouthing off, then getting busted for having 20 pounds in your trunk?

I would say that's basically what he did. He had PUBLIC pictures and chose to be an ass. Had he not said ANYTHING, his photos would still be unseen.

He's not getting busted for acting like an illiterate moron, though. That same undercover cop may not have even taken a second glance at a random idiot if they weren't screaming for attention. It's not like nobody's ever smoked a joint in public before, you just don't draw attention to yourself while you're doing it. You don't draw attention to your house if you're growing inside. Why would you draw attention to your online profile if you're posting pictures of this stuff?

People shouldn't treat their online presence trivially. I would never post anything in a MySpace or Facebook that I wouldn't want my employer to see.

I understand what you're saying here, I just think the line between online and in person is a little finer than people would like it to be. The dude chose to grow, he chose to display that to the world, and then he chose to make himself high-profile. Anyone on the street doing that should expect the same consequence.

You make a solid argument; however.

1. Manimal's a cop and it's probably illegal for him to overlook something like this.

2. Internet stings happen with more frequency these days -- see: "To Catch a Predator" tv shows. I support policing of the internet, just not my posts.

This is the internet version of speeding or running a red light while having weed in your trunk. If you have a grow operation, keep a low profile and don't publicize your stash.

Plus the guy brought it on himself for being a douche. If it were me though, I wouldn't have called the cops, but I would have made him think I did. :D

Good points......

Now that I know he's in CA though, it's a little different. You don't need to hide what you're doing so much. I mean you can get a state issued license for the stuff.

This whole thing may be moot if he's doing this the right way. Posting pics of your weed crop is whole different story when if he's doing it in the manner dictated by the state. It's like showing off your tomatos <-----non an inuendo

Two big lessons here:
1. life is hard for stupid people
2. If you're doing something REALLY dumb (ie growing operation), don't:
a. Publicize it
b. Harrass people who you do not know
c. leave your contact information clearly visible while doing any of the above.

Can I see your tomatoes?

.....just seems like one of those things I might regret having out on the internet one day.....

I mean....what if they're not as big and ripe as some other people's tomatoes?

It might affect future employment opportunities having my tomatoes out there for all to see.

I was young at the time. I did it for the salsa.

Maybe manimal should have left him alone. Then some idiot would have an opportunity to put a slug in that guy's head for some drug deal gone bad. Then, the kids would not have to live with a dad in jail.

It's a win-win.

There is NO crime in the world where you should look the other way for the sake of the kids. All you do is teach the kids a lesson that screws them up for life. Actions have consequences, kids need to learn that, regardless of what the outcome is.

seems a few monkeys could heed from said comment. It amazes me how many people think that being online somehow makes it ok to be abusive towards others (not directed at manimal or BV).

i treat online folks the same way i treat people in person. "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". shouldn't make a difference if it's behind the screen of a computer.

and there is a BIG difference between sarcastic banter and malicious attack. perhaps that's the REAL lesson of manimal's thread...and NOT the legality of pot or whether the guy deserved to get caught.
