I've found a deal on a used 2007 V10.

The catch is that there is about a quarter sized dent on the swingarm, not too deep, and a slight dent from the fork on the main frame.

Questions would be:
1. How is SC about replacing things if they fail.
2. How concerned would you be about dents like that?

Remember I am a large man.

another day, another bike. make up your mind already.

Or maybe you shouldn't bring us every little piece of trash you happen to pick up.

After your recent posts about Santa Cruz, why would you consider picking one up? Do you really think they'd be especially inclined to help you? The "industry" is smaller than you think.

Oh, dents = no bueno.

ah i'm just bustin' yer balls man. rep+ for getting the reference.

where exactly is the dent on the swingarm? It would be of more concern if it were close to a weld.

IDK how SC handles replacement parts for failures (the bike, not you), but if you are not the original owner then expect to have to pay for replacement parts.

I know in the past that SC has a crash replacement policy- you could get a new version of your frame at a reduced price if you had some damage. I assume that's still their policy.

Without seeing the dents there's no way to know how serious they are. In general, dents have to be pretty bad to be a huge concern. That's my opinion, in any case.

I put a thumb sized dent in the downtube of my Sunday the 3rd week of the season and rode it the rest of the year with no worries. Unless they are putting undue stress on a weld most minor (shallow) dents shouldn't be too much of a concern.

get some good pitures and get back to us

Dents are cosmetic. Unless near welds, I wouldn't be worried.

Then again I'm a kiwi. Nothing worries me...

Not a major concern unless you see creases or cracks or it is ON a weld. Even if it was really big, which those are not, the same rules apply. In fact, even if it was on a weld, it's usually not a big deal.

Proof? Look at all the dented Sunday headtubes. The first day I owned my '06 frame I stuck a pedal, crashed, and left a really deep dent on the side of the headtube gusset, so deep that it bent the bottom of the gusset. I rode the piss out of it for all of the '06 season, accumulating many more dents on the downtube and chainstays, sold it cheap to a friend at the end of '06, and he's been rallyin it tough ever since.

In short, it's nothin.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about those dents, my buddy put a huge one in the rear of his v-10 and kept riding it like that for another week at Whistler before getting it changed. SC was very good about replacing it, it was very cheap for a brand new swingarm, and they were even nice enough to ship it to Evolution at whistler so that he could pick it up there (We're based on the East-Coast in Montreal, so it would have taken forever for them to ship it here first, and then for us to ship it to him @ Whistler) A polished rear end might be more expensive, but it will still be reasonable.

Have you ever stood on a coke can? Holds you eh? (well, maybe not you, Dirt)
Then ever tapped the side to make a small dent and seen the thing collapse?
I wonder if its the same with the small dent in the swing arm.
I wouldn't be worried about the one on the mainframe, but that's a skinny swing arm...

I am thinking it over. I have a couple more hours to sew something together with the wisdom and my check book before I have to do anything.

The coke can thing is a pretty interesting analysis though, hadn't thought of it in those terms.

never seen a head tube rip off one of those bikes sounds like a good deal. As far are warramtie stuff normaly it only goes for origanal owners but if you are in with a bike shop who deals with sata cruz they may be able to do something for crash replacemtent. and if they are a good shop they will not try and make a dollar off you on the crash replace ment price pwd cout swing arms are 300 and front triangle for the v-10 i think are around 475. BUy it ride it and sell it once your new bike comes in if you havent killed someone yet

The Dents

The whole bike:
Thats nothing.....I have a huge dent in my rear swingarm and my V10 rides flawless.........I put a XL Lizard skin swingarm protector over it and you can't even tell.

I think it's $375 for a new swingarm. I can check for you if you like.

That analogy is more than interesting, its how the materials work. Don't buy a dented bike.
except that the coke can analogy doesn't accurately represent tube thickness, material, or dents size relative to the particular tube. I'm no engineer but i wouldn't base much of a conclusion on the example of a coke can.

I showed DW the dent in my sunday and his exact words were "Oh, that's nothing I've seen way worse. The only time that tube is under any real stress is when you hit it on something, that's why it's so thin."

I think i've dented just about every frame i've ever owned and my brother raced an Orange 223 a few years ago that had a hole punched through a weld in the downtube by a rock. that was in '04 and i still see that frame at races to this day.
