So yesterday I put a good 2" long gash in my knee(fell on some stairs). Internal and external stitches. Im missing an xc race this weekend but sea otter I really want to make(next thurs). The doctor says the external stitches come out in 12 days(I have an app. on the 22nd), and I should'nt ride before than because where the stitches are the skin will move around too much when pedaling so it will open up and potentially become infected. He also said I could try gently pedaling in a week and see what it's like. What should I do? I really want to race dowhill and slalom at sea otter next week.
ps the internal stitches dissolve in 3 weeks and that's when im supposed ot be ready for back to normal training

Hell, go ahead and race. The worst thing that could happen is a massive infection that causes an amputation.

But hey, you got in one last ride before they chopped your leg off.

Suck it up and ride...

By the time the time-trial came around on Saturday, Vinokourov had his back to the wall. His tour had fallen apart when he crashed on the stage to Autun nine days earlier, gashing both knees so deeply that 30 stitches were required to keep him in the race. On occasions he had barely been able to climb the podium to register in the mornings. He had clung on initially in the Alps only to lose, as it then seemed, all chance of overall victory on the stage to Briançon, when he was unable to hold the pace set by the Spaniard Alberto Contador and the young Colombian Juan Mauricio Soler. He ended the stage in tears, convinced his race was over.

he said I could give a gentle spin in a week and see what it's like. I have always done less than the dr recommended, I broke my back and was surfing within a month, and broke my collar bone and was riding soon after that. I feel like riding one dh run at sea otter wont be too bad on it, by thurs. i will probably feel good as new just wont want to do anything so the stitches don't get interrupted. therefore I feel like I will be able to make it. any further opinions? elaboration would help

I think it is more of a matter of personal perspective rather than what other people think.

If it is something that you truly want to do and have a understanding of the consequences then go ahead, but be sure to get ready for the barrage of hecklers when you finish.

I raced sea otter last year while still being an inpatient at the hospital from injuries recieved while in Iraq. I snuck out for a weekend and ended up blowing out 20 staples in the back of my thigh from a previous shrapnel operation and split open a previously healed surgical insicion.

the difference is, I had a hospital bed to go back to and had to listen to doctors and surgeons tell me how stupid I am,

you will go back to wherever and listen to who ever and may not get things fixed right and may have consequences

What race do you do on Thursday? I thought all of the XC races were held on Sunday. I had a friend who gashed his knee one year at Deer Valley and when the doc went to stitch it up, he was honest and said I will be racing tomorrow so the doctor put in twice the number of stitches....and he tore several of them out during the course of the race.

My dh race is on sat but practice starts on thurs when im going down and slalom is on fri. I am not trying to prove my self its just that in past experience I have been fine doing stuff earlier than what the doctor says.

how old are you? What do you do for a living? Just to add a bit more color to the scenario.

I am a freshmen in a private highschool, ride for the xc team, and race dh as much as I can(not too many races around Marin), and when I am not riding my bike (bmx included) I go surfing. I snowboard/surf a lot in the winter.

Dude, if you are that active, and are lucky enough to be in a private (presumably good) high school, and have your sports funded (again presumably) by your parents, live it up while you can, and take 3 weeks off. Seriously. Take it from everyone here who has been hurt multiple times, the few weeks you will miss out on now will be well worth it in the future. Being a freshman makes you what, 14? 15?

Seriously, listen to your doctor, DO NOT RIDE, and wait for the OK. What Austin Bike said is a little extreme, but it could happen. More likely you will set yourself back in healing and rehab, get infected, and be out way more than 3 weeks with a much larger possibility for a lifelong injury.

Don't f with it. It'll be better to miss the race and not have possible long term problems.

agreed...I tried to rush my healing and have had disastrous results...I was injured on Nov 20, 2006 and I still can't ride without considerable pain...listen to your doc and heal up properly...trust me, in the long run it's just not worth it...D

I wouldn't rush it, take time to heal.....you have many Sea Otters ahead of you. Not that the downhill is particularly hard, but if you crashed on you knee you will risk fouling it up even more than it is.

I know the correct answer, it works for everyone on pinkbike and most on here....just figure out "what would Sam Hill do?" You'll be riding in no time.

As an individual who had your attitude when I was 19 and rode through it, I recommend not doing it. It say this as I sit here with throbbing pain in both knees from destroyed joints (bike crash/wear), low pulsing pain in my lower back from a herniated disc ( bike crash), and a nagging shoulder injury (also from a bike crash). I'm only 27, but it will only get worse. If I could go back in time, other than buying microsoft shares in 1985 and selling in July 2000, I would not have raced when injured. It's NEVER that important, at least if you want to keep doing it...

well I raced and even practiced both days before it, with as little pedaling as possible, it was really fun, all though it restricted me from pedaling as hard as I could have in my race run. I am fine but it will take a little bit longer to heal(like a few more days resting after the stitches come out)
