i'll be swapping either a 2.0L xflow or 16v into 'er one of these days, but for now she cruises just fine with the stock 1.7L and handles the corners like an oversized go-kart. definately makes shuttling an enjoyable experience.

Hell ya… a cheap upgrade would be a 16v swap from a late 80’s Sirocco, bolts right in. In fact I think I saw a picture of one on another thread that was bristling with DH rigs & riders, one of the funniest shuttle shots I’ve seen.

I can only carry 3 so far, two on the rack and one inside. If I get the T2 add on then Ill haul 5.

Road bike and Socom loaded up.

You made the much better choice over an FJ.

I haven't checked but I think the rack we made will work on my Jeep if I have the top off. Although once I get everything done to the jeep I have planned it will be a little difficult getting the bikes onto the rack. But I will be able to shuttle all kinds of nasty trails.

I am going to borrow the same principle just change a few aspects of it. I am making a set of hoops for each rear tire to rest inbetween so they dont bounce around on the roads around here, and I was going to make the whole thing swing like a door so I can still get in the bed of the truck so people arent messing up my paint and body climbing over my tires.

I have a 1990 Chevy half tone regular cab long bed. I can carry 8 bikes at a time but what is the point when only 3 people can ride. Oh how I pine for a Volvo C304

I am cutting Yakima bike trays in half then using bungees or Yakima ratchet straps to hold the rear tires in place. Having things very solid is key since we shuttle on old forest roads.

I get about 18-19 on the hwy and about 14-15 in the city. The tires are 37x12.50 and Im running 5.13 gears so not to bad. Im lovin this thing. It has an entertainment system for road trips too.

I believe there is a video from france shuttling with the unimog.


Anyway, here's how I get to the top. The element is great for travel and riding because it's easy to clean. The Thule rack extension to carry 4 bikes is very tempting looking at this thread.

Broke our rig in last year and it is going strong again this year.


Diesel Kawasaki Trans Mule, it can fit 5 bikes and riders.

not mine... but i've shuttled on it many times...
takes 14 bikes, seats 17. little fridge for cold drinks and there is always 80s music on board. takes you (literally) from sea level to 12500ft above sea level.

I used to have a Caddy with a 2.0 97 jetta block in it. I miss that truck. Fun as hell to drive. I just didn't fit in it that well. I'm almost 6'2.

why, yes, those are ronal turbo wheels. yeah, this truck is way fun to drive, it handles like a go-kart. i haven't done any engine work, but the suspension is pimped out.

For off property shuttling this is my rig. It has not shuttled any bikes in awhile but will be shuttling skiers next weekend.

New shuttle rig-02 Chevy with 38k miles.

I always hated my Sportworks/Thule T2 bike rack on the back. Hitch racks are just hard on bikes where we shuttle. We drive a lot of gravel roads and the dust and rocks kill the bikes if you drive fast. I decided to mount the rack in the bed. I bought a universal hitch and mounted it on the one fenderwell . Then, I had my welding buddy build and mount a piece on the other fenderwell to support the other side. I then had the pieces and bed sprayed in Line X. It works pretty good. I can mount 4 bikes in the rack and one beside the rack. All the gear can go under the bikes. Ya, I could have hauled the bikes on the tailgate, but Im not a fan of that method.
