vw car probems.

I need some input on what you guys think of this situation. Last night I went into a gas station to retrieve a gas cap the person who pumped my gas forgot to put on. As i pulled into the station (very) slowly i hit one of the raised covers. The cover for where they put the gas into the ground from the trucks. Well when i hit the cover it ripped off my oil pan. The car is at stock height, there is no sign for covers. The cost to fix it would be $500 and my insurance deductible is $500. Should the station pay for the damages they did to my car? Has anyone had experience with something like this before?

Is your car lowered?

A friend with a lowered Prelude ripped off his oil pan on a steel metal plate in the road. I don't think he sued the city. :)

I don't see it as a vw car problem, though vw cars are a problem in themselves.

What's the ride hight on a jetta? 4, maybe 5 inches?

How high does this cover rise out of the ground? How "slow" is slow?

Well NJ figured since folks in Jersey can barely even drive, they shouldn't be allowed to pump their own gas since they might accidentally fill the truck or cupholder rather than the tank. IMO I think that if you can't handle pumping your own fuel, chances are you shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a set of car keys, but I digress.

This isn't a dig at soley PSP, I'm an equal opportunity NJ hater.

Yeah...no doubt.. First time I ever went to Jersey, I drove around looking for a self-serve gas station. After encountering station after station of full-serve, I finally gave in and asked Vinnie-the-greasy what the deal was. His response: "We ain't got enough time to worry about takin' the freakin' nozzle out--you got people running up and down tha freakin' parkway with nozzles hanging out their freakin' cahs. 'Jersey hadda invent a freakin' breakaway pump and pay some jerkoff to pump gas for every-freakin'-body."

True story.


My wife has a Jetta---I regularly rip off the lowermost spoiler because I get too close to the curb when parking. Spoiler flexes to go over curb, but when you back out-----RIIIIIIP!!! Doh! ......Sorry honey(again).

Sure your ride height is 5 inches with you out of the car, but when you get in, it may sag an inch leaving you with a 4" clearance. If you tap the brakes, the front of your car will dip (proportional to the health of your shocks/struts).

If you have a 4" clearance with you in the car and try to clear a 3" object while decelerating, you're likely to bottom out. Next time, preload your suspension and pop the front end before you try to clear that 3" object. Works on speedbumps and railroad tracks too.

i dont want a fancy oilpan. I had mobil 1 with less then 1k miles on it all gone now. I plan on puttin a skidplate on the car asap. Last time the oil pan broke (when dad drove it) it cost abotu $500

Owning a VW and living on a farm, you should really learn how to work on your car.

Installing an oilpan should take you 30 mins tops, including filling it...

i know how to work on my own car, i can do just about everything myself on it because i used to work in the auto shop across the street from my house. the owner likes me because he has been there since i was really little, he lets me use the lift, tools, and whatever pretty much when i need it. doing the work myself will save me a little money but not much.

If you have access to a lift then it'll be even easier. It's probably just a bunch of 10mm screws. I say you do the work yourself and the money you save can go to your expensive synthetic oil. C'mon, what's 30 mins of your time?

VR6 A chassis oilpans hang notoriously low, it's not the stations fault your car was designed by a pack of retarded llamas with good design taste.

We're talking about pulling into a parking lot, not boosting doubles at the jump park.

If you realy want to piss money away and your car is a VR6, rumor has it the R32 oil pan will bolt up and gives an extra 1/2 inch of clearance.

those caps can be deceptively taxing on the suspension, often times they have at least two in a row right next to each other, giving the suspension little time to rebound and bottoms out the car. If a car hits one it's likely to hit another one very soon afterwards, the car would be riding much lower than usual.

Kinda like riding an RST through a rock garden.

but the thought of PSP riding in a Jetta with skid plates and a dirtbike n top makes me shiver, and it ain't cold here.

ok so the oil pan has a crack in it, hit pretty hard. I am going to epoxy it and it should work. The first oil pan got the same treatment, then it got hit a second time. I am going to look into an R32 pan, if it does mount up the same way and gives more clearance. I am getting a diesel geek skidplate asap. I had brand new synthetic motor oil in the car. When the car is fixed im going to drain out the old and put new mobil1 in.
