I'd like to get some new brake lines, levers and pads for my 2006 Avid Codes. Who has some experience with aftermarket parts for these brakes? I had good experience with GRC levers on my old Hayes brakes, but I can't find GRC levers for the Codes. I liked my Goodridge brake lines for Hayes as well, though my rear line did kink.

Who is running what parts on their Codes?

Car, truck, and MX forums tend to have product specific FAQ and info threads. I'm surprised we don't have more of those on Ridemonkey. Hopefully this will grow into one for the Codes. If indeed something like this does exist and I couldn't find it during my searching, flame away and point me in the right direction.

I'm pretty sure the sicklines levers are danger boy, and for lines go with goodridge braided, and pads just get stock replacement works best for me

I want to get the lvers, I know they will feel a little nicer and make me feel blingy -- but I doubt there is a real perf increase.

Goodridge lines were AWESOME on my Hayes Mag, and made them a tiny bit stronger and WAY better modulation. I have heard that the codes are so stiff that the flex in the hose provides some modulation and that using Goodridge would result in a strong, but poor modulating brake -- this is regurgitated hearsay so consider that!

Pads? 1 Org 1 Metallic in each caliper - Done!

These brakes stop me at 250lbs with aplomb! No fade, great modulation, super strong --- tried them with metallics and my jaw dropped.


Pragamatic = Go with Acadians advice

If you must bling, get the levers and skip the other 2.

yep. just bleed them and they will feel like new. put some fresh pads in and new rotors after you bleed them and you will swear you had brand new brakes.

my first set of codes felt mushy for the longest time. I bled, re-bled and bled them over and over...but still couldn't get them to feel crisp like my Juicy's. That's until I got metalic pads (when they finally became available) Seriously, it made a big difference in lever feel. they went from feeling mushy to super crisp like my Juicy's.

I tried Goodridge lines with Juicy's and and it didn't make any difference...they didn't feel any better and I ended up going back to the stock line.

Stuck goodridge on my biancos and formula "the ones" and big difference in lever feel. Definently more wooden and crisp! I bled them before putting ss lines on and no go still squishy!
I have noticed a difference on all the brakes Ive had when swapping to ss lines. I pulled the lines off the biancos and swapped them over to the ones and put standard lines on the biancos with a perfect bleed and the rear lever again goes to the grip again like before ss lines!

eh... why didn't you just stick with Juicy's then?

Personal preference. For DH application I found the Codes to perform much better than the Juicy's.

for one, I like the feel of the Code levers. they are stiffer and at the rate I crash, a bit stronger than the Juicy's.

On LONG DH runs during the dead heat of the summer, I've had my Juicy's heat up - which changes the feel of the lever. This never happened with my Codes. The Codes just feel more consistent to me for DH. As an FYI - I use Juicy's on all my other bikes and they work just fine...

Very cool. I am glad to see all the replies. Sounds like what I'll do is bleed the Codes with my fluid of choice (for me, that's Motul) and use Goodridge lines, stock levers and metallic pads. On new, big-ass rotors, this should be a bangin' set of stoppers. I'm almost tempted to pain the calipers with some in-your-face bright color high-temp paint like the VW guys like to do to their calipers.

I like the levers that came with my Codes, I just wanted the Dangerboy ones. I really like the new blingy levers that I have. I didn't need them, I wanted them. Yep, waste of money. However, $49.00 isn't a big deal. That won't even get me a 1/2 tank of gas in my truck! Besides, the levers feel great!
