I have no idea where I am
WTF.

Why do so many people in this small minded town feel compelled to ask me that muther fvcking goddamn question? Every fvckin day some well meaning dip sh1t asks me "How's business". That question is so intrusive it makes my blood boil. It is none of your fvcking business, that's how it is asshole. I don't ask you personal questions that don't concern me. I've come up with a multitude of responses, but none seem to work. I hate this town for that very reason. When did my business become no longer mine? WTF. Most of these fvcktards haven't bought anything from me, nor do they intend to. Why can't people talk to me like I'm a normal person? They seem to have some uncontrollable urge to ask me intrusive questions in order to place me in some bizarre context that allows them to evaluate my worth. Fvck them! They should mind they're own damn business. I'm so pissed off I can barely see straight.

I'm going riding....

Hrm.

Seems like a standard small talk question to me. Kinda like asking "How's it going?" only a little more applicable to you personally rather than being so generic.

There is a big difference in small talk and being nosey. This town has one of the biggest rumor mills I've ever seen. No where else that I've lived have people asked me that fvcking question.

Now, I'm really going riding. When I get back, I'll tell you all some of my responses to said question.

How's it going is a funny one because 98% of the time the person asking could care less. It is fun to respond with a long winded story about personal history and/or drama, possibly involving the illness of a family pet is also a bonus.

Move to Brooklyn. You will meet a million uncaring assholes who want your country bumpkin ass to move out of their way.

People are jealous that you own your own business, yet they don't want to give you their money to help you be successful- they'd rather go buy jewlry at walmart or some fancy place w/a hot chick and pretty marble floors. Retail is a pain in the ass and half the customers are jerks. Just MO. Stay positive and appreciate the 20% (if more great for you) of cool customers that actually appreciate your work.

I have no idea where I am
OK, I'm back.

There's nothing like some twisty single track and a couple of two wheeled drifts for anger management.

I just had to vent.

I get asked that question several times a week, and I realize that a fair amount of it is just intended to be small talk. Most small business owners really detest that question because it is very personal to the owner. How I'm doing business wise is absolutely no one's business but mine.

I've had this discussion with other full time, professional artists. We tend to get badgered with nosey questions by people who are not self-employed the most. They do this so that they can categorize us and place a value of our worth as a means of understanding something they, themselves have not experienced. Many times I've been asked if I have a job, or if I make a living doing this. How is that any body's business other than mine? It's rude and intrusive.

Being in the public eye, I'm aware of the fact that I should hold my tongue as it could jeopardize my reputation and subsequently cost me customers. I tried to come up with a response that would end the conversation or at least change the subject without offending the person. However a lot of people that ask that question won't leave it there, they just keep digging. Example; "How's the jewelry business?", I respond with,"unbelievable" (all purpose and noncommittal). Then they ask, "Unbelievably good or unbelievably bad?"

Today a woman asked and I said nothing, I just smiled. As I was contemplating saying something smart-assed, she tells me, " Ohh, well, hang in there..."

Thanks for letting me blow off some steam.

And as far as the custom title:

From the age of 11 to 17 I lived outside of Philly. That was one thing I missed about living there, no one gave a damn. You could mind your own business.

Another thing I miss about the North is that when you flip off another driver they won't follow you home.

Nosey Fvcktard: So... How's business?

Metalsmith(angry): Not bad, so when you gonna by something from me? Your wallet and my cash register really should get better aquainted. I'm sure they'll be great friends. As a matter of fact, how about we setup a lunch date with your wallet, your wife's purse, and my register. I'll pencil you in for 8:30. It's fine if you can't make it that early. I'm sure you wife will come by after she drops the kids off at school. By the way, could you ask your wife to bring back my boxers? She accidently made off with them this morning and I kinda want them back.

Oh - I gather you are in the custom made jewelry business. I have a good friend who took over the jewelry business his parents started in the 1950s. Independent jewelers have been suffering for years. He makes his coin brokering estate diamonds that are better in color and clarity than what chain jewelers sell. He also makes a fair amount of coin on repairs which are almost always cash in hand deals.

He says its not a commodity business but more a business of personal relationships... or some crap like that.

I ask other business owners (other contractors/vendors plus unrelated businesses) that question all the time. It's the best way to get a rounded view of the local economy. Sales at the local gourmet store are a great indicator to the looseness of my clientele's wallets.

It annoys me when customers cruising for a deal or wanker MBA types inquire about business though. (actually they're usually the same person :greedy:)
