so, about a 1 1/2 years ago, i broke my tibia plateau and snapped my ACL...my knee is now deformed with lumps of scar tissue and screws sticking out. i recently went down in a weaksauce manor, bumped my knee and delt with pain and swelling for the next week.

basically, any bump on my bad knee is painfull. i'm in search of the ultimate knee protection.

i ran into a moto guy on the trail using this setup, and he raved about them. anybody on here have experience with Asterisk knee protection for biking?

does it hinder at all? bulky? freedom of movement?

can i get a prescription from my Doc for a set? how?

thanks for any insight.

That thing looks wicked and looks like it works too. Find a local place that carries it or an online retailer with a good return policy. What fits well for one guy might not fit well for you. My only concern is if it hits the top tube when you pedal.

there are quite a few people out there that use them... from amateurs to elite of the elite pros. some use them occasionally, others use them constantly when they ride/race. a few don't necessarily want you to know they're running them for some reason. donno why.. we all get hurt... anyways...

from what they've told me, it's no hinderance at all.. feels like any other kneepad out there, but sturdier.... but i have had no personal usage with them.

I used them for Moto, but they are pretty $$$$. Of course if you are worried about your knee then you can't worry about the dough - it would be worth it for your peace of mind if nothing else. A doc should be able to prescribe one for you, but depending on your insurance be ready for a fight. Some insurance carriers are easier to deal with then others, but most will deny unless it is work related.

I know someone who uses them for biking specifically because of a knee issue. They apparently fit really nice and snug. They are mostly used for moto though I believe

i rode all last season with em a few months out of a knee surgery, so I wanted the limited mobility they offered. that said, there were no mobility issues, no hindrance and I never felt them any more than I have felt any other knee pad in 9 years of down hilling. they were bomber ass protection when i went down on my knees. spendy, but they work well. highly recommended particularly if you are fresh out of surgery, or anywhere under a year of full recovery. the one issue I was told about is that if you use them but have no knee issues they can weaken the ligaments in your knees.

asterix and cti are the same the asterix offers better overall protection compared to the cti but the cti can be prescribed. I have a cti but would love the asterix if i could afford them.

I have no personal experience wearing them. However, you may want to go to http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=48 and contact DrMark on there. He is doing a study on knee braces: "The study is being conducted by Dr. Mark S. Sanders (AKA "The Motocross Doc"), a long-time TT sponsor and Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon."

http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e29ssaolfelhyv6e/a021dcfg6goffr/greeting

He is looking into if knee braces do more harm than good. Like someone else said, they can weaken the joing long term. The other weakness of them that DrMark has stated is the increased likelyness of long bone fractures.

Just sign on to the forum and PM him. He will want to se the x-rays and MRI.

Astrisk and CTi are 2 separate companies and the hinges are slightly different. I wear the Asterisk braces. I have the old design with the old strapping system. The new system keeps the braces from slipping down your leg (this sucks if you wear the braces all day long). The main issue I have with my braces, other than slipping, is the fact that you have to learn to adjust your stance so the braces don't hit your top tube. Once you figure that out, you're golden, and you forget about them. Mine were prescribed by my ortho...he didn't really want to do it, but I kind of forced him...I felt bad for a second :) The protection is great and there is no pain when you fall. You can adjust the amount of extension on the hinges but I run them wide open (180) because it feels funny when you can't straighten out your leg. Customer service is great, and if you live in SoCal it's even better. There are other brands out there but, combined with all of the R&D from CTi, it's hard to beat the functionality of this brace. Yes, you can break your leg with these braces, but as you know, it's better than the alternative. I doubt the brace weakens the ligiments since the brace does not hinder movement or support the joint. Also, there are several sizes to fit you...it's not a 1 size fits all.

Hope I answered all of your questions.
