v10 2008 spring rate issues

Hello, I have SC V10 2008 with fox dhx5.0 and stock spring FOX 400x2,8 and it was too way soft for me (i am about 75Kg, 165lbs), I replaced the spring with Marz 500x2,75 and still is soft and bottoming out. According to santacruzbicycles the correct spring rate for me is 450.

now i am looking for 550x2,75...

what do you thing guys?

sounds like something is setup wrong. 450-500 should be good for you. Also define bottoming out, are you hucking to flat? I could bottom out my old v10 in the parking lot doing bunny hops, but it felt great on the trail.

I use a 450 spring on my vivid with my 08 V10 and am getting the correct ammount of sag. I am the same weight as you.

FWIW, I have a '06 V-10, and I also had some bottom out problems with the stock DHX. I weigh about 190lbs and was running a 550 lb spring. Anyway, I ended up replacing the DHX with a CCDB, and voila - no more bottom out. In fact, I run it with a 500 lb spring now and absolutely love the set up.

While I do feel the DHX is a great shock in many applications, I'm not sure it is (currently) the best shock choice for the V-10 given it's unusual leverage ratios. I certainly do not mean to second guess the SC engineers who spec'ed the DHX (actually, it seems I do :) ), but I sometimes wonder if the spec was based on the deal they could get on the DHX or if they already had purchased a significant number of 8.75 X 2.75?

Personally, I would like to see a Vivid on the new V-10's, as I doubt the CCDB's will ever get widely spec'ed.

NORCAL is the hizzle
Have you tried adjusting the air volume and/or air pressure in the piggy-back chamber? One of the great things about the DHX is how it can be tweaked to work with many different frames, but it needs to be set up correctly. And no offense but are you sure it's an '08 and not an earlier model year you purchased in '08?

meassure the sag,for the 07 V10 it was 40% it should be around the same for the new one. If the sag is right, then you have the right springrate. If riding downhill you bottom out in places where you shouldn't normally bottom out, then there is something wrong with the damping of your shock. Tell this to fox or sc and I'm sure they will do something about it. Shouldn't this be a malfunction of the shock and just your riding-style, then consider getting another shock, maybe custom valved one (ccdb, avy). Cheap but not smart solution could be to just put some higher density oil into the shock....of course this might void the warranty and make it blow up. good luck

yes, I do some jumps to flat or stairs, but nothing intense, on the trail its amazing. bottom out schrader is setted almost to maximum, 170psi in main chamber and and the spring not thightened hard, 1-2 turn. when I thightened to 6-8 turns doesnt bottoming out so easy but i loose the small bump sensivity...

I will add that you can usually bottom out most downhill bikes (as they're usually set up pretty soft for bump compliance), especially when you huck to flat. For me tho, I felt like the DHX bottomed out too often, and in situations where it really shouldn't (regardless of set up). If one believes what the folks at CC say, the DHX has some pretty ugly spikes on the dyno test - now of course, they were trying to sell me an expensive shock, so who knows. But again, the CCDB has worked great so far for me in terms of quality travel throughout the stroke, altho I can still bottom it out when I flat huck something big (shorting the end jump at the US Open comes to mind)...

This thread is interesting to me. I have just purchased a new V10 that came with a 400lb spring and although I have not ridden it yet it feels waaaay soft. According to the spring calculator I need a 450 but I am struggling to see how this can be the case. The 400 spring gives me about 55% sag and the shock is set up as per S.C. website

^^

Yeah, it certainly breaks the "3:1 average leverage ratio" rule, but I *think* the way it works is: super high at the beginning of the stroke, more progressive in the middle, and a little less progressive in the end...That said, I have just strapped on my bullsh!t boots, so that may be complete offal...See, someone explained it to me one time, but I have since started downing unhealthy quantities of Nite Hawks, and my memory has suffered terribly as a result...

in this case, v10 has a strange or weird leverage ratio which makes the suspension feels in a different way than a standard dh bike. it is also more exposed to bottomin out situations only jumpin to flats (dirt style) in advantage of pure dh trail where it feels amazing.
I`ll try 550x2,75 soon, all i want is not to lose the small bump sensivity...

you are riding a size small? I bet you need to push your seat forward.
companies have a nasty habit of not giving you any seat bottom out clearance on small size DH frames.

yes, it is a small size, the seat is maximum forward and not touching the rear wheel but is very very close to it. [/U][/U]

the setup guide from sc i think is calculated only for pure dh and not for dirt

This might sound stupid but, did you order your bike with the spring set up on the Santa Cruz website more than 3 weeks ago? If yes, then you made the wrong choice...they completely updated the new V10 spring table about 3 - 4 weeks ago...they hiked up the spring on most of the rider weights. Per the old table I was ready for a #450..per new table I need a #500

i tried #550 lbs spring and isnt better, it seems a bit harder, the small bump sensivity are gone but not bottomin out so easy. i think i switch back to #500 and no more jumpin to flat from now on in city:shocked:
since when were DH bikes designed to jump to flat :disgust1: in a city??
get a hardtail for that kind of stuff.

I have a 2008 V10, medium. It came with a 500lb spring, though right away I took off the dhx 5.0 and pun on my rocco wc, and It works great. Ramps up really hard at the end of the travel, I don't have any of the clicks turned in on the highspeed compression adjustment. I am running 180psi in the shock. So I feel that with a rocco, you can definitely set it up to ramp up super hard, however, as said above, dh bikes aren't meant to be hucking to flat, haha.

me too i want to put a roco wc soon, i read over internet and feels more better than fox. someting strange: i measured my fox and it`s length is 228mm eye to eye not 222mm as SC says on their website. it has stroke of 2,75 not 2,5 like 222mm shocks. On marzocchi website for 2008 roco wc are available only in length of 222 and 241mm. Are available 228mm roco?

how much do you weight and what model of your roco are you using? 2008 and 228mm?

I had the same problem with my v10. i was running a 450 and it was way to soft.(weigh like 170) guys at fox told me to throw a 550 on there and it fixed the problem. the problem i see is that your running 170 in your chamber. it doesnt need to be that high. try going with a 550 and like 70-80 in the chamber and you'll feel a big difference.

minimum pressure is 125 psi for dhx5. anyway #500 has a correct amount of sag, amount 33-35% with only 2 turns of preload, 6 ret of propedal and rebound and 155psi in main chamber. it`s feel great on trail and its take some time to adapt riding this v10.... next shock will be roco wc or double barrel
