a true american tragedy: speeding teen driver in an SUV on the way to starbucks hitting a girl on a bike

Teen who hit 6-year-old was going nearly 50 mph in alley
A Colorado Springs teenager was driving through an alley at more than three times the speed limit when his sport utility vehicle slammed into a 6-year-old bicyclist, critically injuring her, police said.

According to an arrest affidavit released Tuesday, the 16-year-old's 1999 Jeep Cherokee skidded 33 feet before the collision, leading police to estimate its speed at between 47 and 52 mph. The speed limit in alleys is 15 mph.

Lily Griesan suffered severe brain injuries, broken bones and a punctured lung. She remains at The Children's Hospital in Aurora.

The boy, who lives nearby, told officers that he was on his way to Starbucks when he realized he had left his wallet at home and turned around, the affidavit said.

He was northbound as Lily rode west through an intersecting alley just ahead of her 9-year-old sister. Lily was in the middle of the alley when she was hit.

A 6-foot-tall fence obstructed their views of each other. Motorists at unmarked intersections, including alleys, are supposed to yield to the person at their right.
there are those who want to severely restrict the freedom of minor drivers, and this is just the ammo necessary.

Yeah a teen was driving like an idiot. There's some big news. Let's punish all teens.

16 year olds have no business:

Driving over the speed limit
Driving a vehicle that can hold more than two people and some school books
Driving to Starbucks

I think all cars driven by teens need to have a cap on horsepower (and governors put on) and there should be a national teen driving curfew.

If you are 16 and hit someone - BOOM, automatic license revocation. Permanent.

if i can get one of my cop friends to spill his name, i'm going to publish it on the local boards.

or i can ask local realtors about homes for sale in this area, then look it up on the assessor's page.

if this family's smart, they're already moved out & staying with friends in the UP of MI, the interior of maine, or bainbridge island

This is one of the reasons we moved. People used to use our alley as a short-cut.

My neighborhood ain't the set of Blues Brothers.

We had a thing in the paper where this 16 yo girl was saved from her burning car by a fireman.

In the article, it said her car "veered from the roadway for unknown reasons" and that "no mechanical issues were found."

I guess she wasn't expecting to see her stupid lie on the front page of the paper.

I would love to see more rigorous driving tests AND more restrictive licensing to minors. I don't think either of those will eliminate teenagers doing stupid things in cars.

16 is too young to drive.....don't know how many times I've said it......
****, on farms in Ohio we were driving at 12. The problem isn't just age, it's entitlement, irresponsibility, and the increasing size and power of shiny cars that idiot parents buy their kids.

I guess we are more gangsta here. I sometimes hang out after work in our alley with some of my neighbors and their kids who play up and down it. We have had kids in cars and trucks try and hall a$$ down the alley and the streets around our houses, but we just throw bottles or rocks at them. Even some of the grandmothers try and chase the fast drivers down to hit em with their cane. We scare the sh$t out of stupid drivers around our neighborhood and drive out the wanna-be 12 year old gang members. I think it is up to the community to protect their kids and prevent stupid sh$t like this a-hole did in CO.

I was 16 once, & I didn't crash a single car at that age. Punish the ****heads that mess up, but not all young drivers. 16 is plenty old enough for a person to start driving. It's the 15.9 years of bad parenting beforehand that causes that crap to happen.

My older brother had two paper routes and several odd jobs from the time he was 14 and saved money for two years to buy his first car - a 1970 Triumph GT6 coupe.

Sweet car. He rebuilt it from the ground up.

One week after he got his license he totaled it.

I was happy because my older brother is an asshole.

16 year old drivers suck.

She was hit by a SUV going 50mph. What good would a helmet do?
She was hit and the end of the SUV doing a 30 braking skid, so maybe it was way less than 50 mph. They estimated the speed from the length of the skid.

A helmet might keep a kid out of the ICU.

Considering he was in an SUV, the braking distances are probably close to the max.

150'-30'= he was 120' short.

all the eSpeculating has to factor in road surface. mostly, our alleys are packed dirt. occasionally, there'll be paved or even pothole ridden slag.

doesn't change the fact this 16 y.o. kid sucks at life

edit: tread quality too

It's all irrelevant if CS's alleys are like ours, you shouldn't be doing more than 10mph MAXIMUM. In fact, one could argue that the alleys have enough kids and aren't long enough to do more than idle out of them.
