should be living at the beach a bunch this summer, and was looking to get a surfboard finally. I have surfed a decent amount, but always on a longboard, I was looking at a shortboard or a fish.

I was looking at a used stewart funboard comp ( http://www.stewartsurfboards.com/boards_pages/boards.html ) Its a good deal, and a 7' (x 21" and under 2" thick) thruster. I'll be surfing at hampton beach, knee to chest high at biggest (atleast for me right now), so its going to need to work on smaller waves. Anyone have any experience with this type of board, or something they would recomend? also, im 6'3" 190lbs.

What I was woried the most about is the thickness and the width, seems a little narrow and thin, but I dont really know.

Sounds like that board is for bigger waves. However, it still looks pretty fat in the nose...

If the waves you are going to be surfing on are smaller, have a look at their fish. These boards are fun.

For regular surfing, you should be looking at around 6'6" - 6'8" depending on experience. I am bang-on 6 foot and have a 6'2", 6'4", 6'5" and a 6'8". They are all back at my parents place in NZ however, as there is no surf here in Morzine:disgust:

i am able to get a good deal on this one used, as I cant spend over $250 right now. I was recomended 7' + by cinamon rainbows in hampton (were I'll be surfing) I am most worried about wether or not it will have the float or not. It is a funboard shape so it should have more than a shortboard.

The funshape sounds a bit narrow and thin. Maybe check one with a little more girth or go with the big guy fish, but coming from a LB the fish may be a bit skatie for you. I glass boards for a living and have over 9,000 under my belt so if you need to know anything else about boards let me know. www.batsurf.com

I have an Infinity BoneCruncher, which I really like. They aren't making it any more, but its a 7'6" gun, built wide for my tons of fun. Takes off really well in mixed conditions, and is an absolute star in the big stuff.

Mind you not as fast getting out on it as I was on my 8'7", but this is a lot more nimble.

Where you going to be at this summer? What you want is mostly determined on where you going to be.

I would say on that "fun board/thruster shape" it is too thin... width fine, lenght (personal pref) but depending on where the foil is on that it may be hard to make the switch over from longboard which most of them have a bunch of float that helps to cover your @ss in crappy conditions! Also, with more float, they usually have a bigger sweetspot. I would see if you could find a stewart egg or some other traditional mini long board. As Vader said and as you originally asked, a fish is an option, and depending on what you find, or how its shaped, it can be a good transition board, and will definately help out in the crappy summertime conditions we have here on the "right coast"

heck shape your own! tons of info on swaylocks! :thumb:

remember I know you can get a good deal on that board... BUT IT'S ONLY A GOOD DEAL IF YOU CAN USE IT!!! IF NOT YOU ARE THROWING $250 away that you could put towards a board you keep in your quiver for a loooooong time!

I really started looking for a shortboard or a fish, the problem is everyone holds onto there fish's haha, and i need used. Then I looked at a fun board because it will be easier. Ive never had trouble catching waves, so it was really between a seven foot shorty and a shorter fish. Do you think this will be more floaty then a standard 7' short?

I really, really want a fish but am having trouble finding any in new england.

yeah for how long it is, its really thin... the width isnt too bad, my 6'4 is at 20 3/4" and it feels wide on the deck even though the nose is a focking needle...

i personally dont like riding any board that is under 2 1/2" thick and shorter than a 5'9 fish or 6'1 thruster... but thats just me... i surf a 6'8 at triple overhead Blacks:busted:

considering what you'll be surfing in, i would say seriously, seriously keep your eyes out for a fish! if you cant find a decent fish (with Lokbox:biggrin:), i'd say look for a CI Sashimi. i rode a 6'2x 21 3/4"x 2 3/8" down in Costa Rica at Playa Negra on a 2 foot mushy day and had a blast. I also rode it at 4 foot Marbella(granted thats a more heaving wave no matter when) and it worked fine... the fin setup wasnt right for me and i was too lazy to move them, but it worked really well once i compensated for it!
you might be able to find an older one of those for pretty cheap...

damn, i wish you were down here, i have a 6'1 CI Mongrel that feels and rides like a little bigger of a board... but maybe for you thats too short no matter what...

good luck man!
dont stop lookin for a fish! i'll never quit riding mine!

Im not exactly sure right now, do you think the length is ok?
it depends on the thickness really!

I knew a few of the WRV shapers that is all...

A 6'3" fish would most likely be fine, they are wider through the tail and up into the nose which will offer more float right off the bat, but the thickness is still important!

I have a nice "fat guy" longboard with a nice tailblock that I had shaped for me so I can catch the summertime crap we get on the E-Coast. also, I only get to the beach for 2 weeks plus weekend road trips, so I need something that can paddle FAST and can cover for my mistakes.

I'll post up a pic in a minute if I can get to it at work.

How big should I be looking for in a fish? would a 6'3" be long enough for me? (Im 6'4" 190)

it depends on how you like them... i'm 6'0 185 and ride a 5'9 fish and it feels on the spot perfect... i tried out my buddy's 6'2 and it felt like a boat.
they are awesome boards, but they dont ride well, imo, when they are big... they just float on the surface and dont utilize the rails to actually do a turn... its like riding a skateboard with stiff trucks versus riding a carveboard with medium springs...

i've never surfed anything outside of Channel Islands or some boards from my buddies who are shapers, so i cant really comment on any other company:biggrin:

the board doesnt really lose maneuverability, it still tuns like it would if it were smaller, but instead of using the whole rail, it lust kinda floats there but still turns...
its more of a personal preference for me... it will probably feel like a longboard, except waaay more loose

you'll probably be happy with it, it may take some time to adapt to it, but once you do, you'll probably be stoked... those boards work well in damn near every condition

You should check out a Donald or Guy Takayama board. They make crazy nice fun boards like youre looking for. Also, I would definitely recommend looking for a surftech/epoxy board. It will last a lot longer, and is far more bouyant so you can get a shorter board for more maneuverability without sacrificing the speed and "floatability"
