Are there trails in Carkeek?

If not, anyone have any interest in pushing to get some legit ones there?

I rode it before there were no bicycle signs... It just seemed like too many people too close to the city etc...

a few years back I found a single track dh trail down the green belt behind the houses on sunset hill... not sure if it's still there...

I only rode it 1x and thought there were too many people around to make if fun... ie can't go that fast, can't build, have to watch out for people, people and dogs etc.... easier just to go to St Eds, the Collonade, or tapeworm... back then you could ride at Marginal wy also...

Part of me wants to go the parks department and see what they think about the idea of letting us build trails there. I have to figure for as nice as the hiking trails are that they had to be machine made, at least on the trails they mark as "maintained."

If I could talk them into letting us do an aggressive XC trail, would you be interested in helping to build? Good, solid, sane drops built to IMBA standards with ride arounds, maybe a couple other fun bits. I think it could be done, but I'd need strong backs with time to kill if I can get it to happen.

It'll never happen down there. Too many people hiking and bird watching, plus a good amount of the area is wetlands.

Downer.

I like the idea of having a trial right out my back yard that's in the middle of a major metropolitan area.

You don't think it would work if we stayed on the high sides of things? Skip the whole beach area, maybe other then as a turn around, and try to stay on the outside of the park?

I'd say, "don't waste your time just asking here" and contact Justin and Jon at the BBTC and see if they have talked to the city about it. They may have already got a "no go" from them. This isn't the first time someone has pondered a new line down there. My guess is that they are happy with us over at Colon-aide and like it that way. If anything, the Marginal stuff would have gone down way before anythign new at Carkeek.

I am going to contact them in the morning.

I think that there's potential here. Just have to work out what sort of noise/leverage needs to be applied.

Yeah. There is. But, lots of red tape and convincing. The good news is that we're riding a high with the city/county right now so if you can find those bodies and a plan, you may be able to pull it off.

My brother in law lives right off 15th above it so that will be convenient for him as well. Maybe he'll have a reason to get back into biking.

Don't expect to be building this summer though. This stuff takes time. But, if you are that local, it should be worth it.

I'm in town for at least the next three years, so I am local, dedicated and motivated. More trails are just a good thing, especially since Seattle is really pressing this whole "Bike friendly city" thing.

I think if we did something off the main line, made it understood what was for bikes and what was for hikers, and then we made it entertaining, it could garner some good press for the city, which is always a good thing.

Do the footwork this summer, get the plans approved over the fall/winter, maybe cut some ground in 2009 spring.
