I hear from a coworker that the lozenges work better than the gum; he used them with success to help curb the habit. My wife is going to get the gum to help her, I'll let you know how it goes

Most people have a pretty standard daily smoking schedule. Cut out one cig each week or every couple of days out of your routine until you're done.

1. Dont buy any more ciggys
2. Dont smoke any more ciggys.

Good luck, I hear kicking the smokes is one of the hardest quits out there...

5-6 years ago my dad quit, just stopped smoking them one day. He was a major pain in the ass to live with for a few months, but he's been cigarette free since then, so it's doable. My mother on the other hand refuses to quit, despite my trying to get her to.

My dad recently just quit smoking. He used a product called Chantix (its a prescription) and he hasn't had a cigarette in probably 7 months now. I would definitely look into non-prescription methods first however, and use something like this if you're not having any luck with them.

My Mom quit, when she fell over and died. We tried for years to get her to, telling her the ciggies were going to get her one day, and they did.

Death from cancer is not a pretty death.

First, set a date. You can cut back like the one person suggested, but then set a hard date when no more cig's.

Second, tell everyone that you're quitting, try (as much as reasonable) to avoid situations that you ALWAYS smoke at.

Third, get acupuncture. It really freakin' works. You'll have to go maybe every other day for the first couple of weeks, to help with the withdrawl, but then, it'll really help keep you from reaching for it.... seen it help lots o' folks.

Fourth, get acupuncture!!

Good luck, don't be discouraged by set-backs and keep "quitting", as many times as it takes to stick!

I can only offer this: Really think about why you want to quit. Then use that as motivation and stick to it no matter what. For me it was my kid but it's different for everyone.

One other thing...if you have friends or a "significant other" who smoke get ready to find some new ones 'cause it a lot more difficult to stop when everyone else around is still doing it...D

It's a hard one to do. I smoked for the better part of ten years but have been cig-free for 3 years now. I tried probably 15 times before I actually succeeded. Ironically, I could get thru the first six months with no problem but would start back after that.

Anyway, I finally quit when I got sick for about a week and couldn't breathe. I just never started back...best decision of my life. I've been tempted from time to time to sneak one in but I always think about riding my bike and how that will affect my performance. Good luck!

Oh...be sure that on your quit date you wash all of your clothes and exercise EVERY day. If your clothes smell fresh, that will deter you and after exercise you won't want anything to do with cigs.

About 6 years ago I coughed up something that looked like a diseased jellyfish. Haven't smoked one since that very minute...no withdrawals, no prescriptions, no voodoo. I consider myself very fortunate that it worked out that way. Now I have around 2 grand a year to spend on bikes that I used to spend on Newports.

Luck to you mredrock....I hope you beat them damn things.

If you really want to quit, deep down inside, then you can do it cold turkey. I quit June 2, 1995, cold turkey. Before hand, I cut way down. My last day, I only smoked 3, and that was the end of the pack.

Start cutting down by having your first smoke later than usual. If you get up and light up, wait 15 minutes before the first. Then wait longer between smokes. Limit yourself to where you can smoke. I stopped smoking inside before I quit. A lot of times, you light up when you are bored. I know I did.

When you get dizzy on the first smoke in the morning, then you have broken the addiction to nicotine. Then all you have to do is break the habit of smoking.

Good luck. Don't give up trying to quit. Quitting nicotine is harder than quitting heroin.

a friend of mine did chantix when it first came out...it seemed to work for him...the thing that got my brother to quit was he got sick and couldn't smoke for a while and after he got better, he went to go smoke and hated the taste of it, so he just quit

or you could try maybe giving it up for something else, if you have an "addictive lifestyle" you could try maybe mountain biking for your fix, maybe when ever you feel a craving for a cig, just hop on your bike and ride around the neighborhood until the craving goes away...i don't know if that kind of thing works, i've never smoked, but it kind of makes sense to me

I need to do this myself... every time I ride I have to push past the shortness of breath.

Seems to me the best way is to start breaking your routine, as a couple of people already said. If you smoke while you drink coffee, or before bed... Don't!. etc.

This might help http://www.becomeanex.org/#learn_overview

Good luck

My brother finally quite smoking as he began to run and also wanted to do a marathon and quitting help him run faster i.e. he finally found something to motivate him to stop smoking. I think that is the key find something that motivates you to not smoke and when you feel the need to smoke think about that and how not smoking helps you reach that goal. Its the cool feeling where you control your life and what you do not the cancer sticks.

On a different and sad note the third friend of mine just lost his farther to lung cancer.
