A Downhiller's Perfect Trailbike

A buddy of mine recently built up a pretty dang nice Sinister Ridge. I helped him build up a trailbike worthy of some thrashing around the local xc trails. Seeing that he was used to riding his big bike, he didn't want to spare any strength on his "other" bike. Pretty much all of the parts could have been used on a lightweight DH race bike (with the exception of the frame/fork and tires). Here's a few photos:

Looks nice but I think that some stuff is just to heavy duty. I use my XC bike for heavy trashing around and the only strong parts I have are Wheels, Fork and Cranks. Rest is XC based and it was used with little upgrades for 5-6years. Plus he could save some $$$ on some parts and get himself a nice flexy trailbike fully (some of them can really take a beating and the flex makes the ride pretty nice)

Bet I could smoke him on my piece of crap Haro X.3 hardtail since all those parts don't do a damn thing better than the taiwanese generic rust coated ones on mine. Unless his fork somehow has a magic carpet plush button my Minute doesn't have. :D

Honestly..to make a DHers hardtail, just add DH tubes. He could feed so many starving artists....:thumb:

I rode a 2004 ridge for a while last summer. (04 has a 1.5 headtube )set up ss, with a Bomber 6" drop off sc fork, 20mm axle, and single tracks .the bike was sick. instead of soaking up terrain like a dh bike it just skipped over the top of it. it was light too. you could just pick it up and put it down. i think i only got 1 flat during that time. it was nimble and bombproof. by the third or fourth run of the day I would be dead. also had basically the same set up on a p1 and both were fun and made shet difficult

Awesome bike. It is really well done, I love the parts spec and aesthetically the bike is the perfect combo of white, black and blue. Don't listen to these whiners, burly is better. Really, really nice.

You wont get far on the trails with your seat angled like that. It's a pedal bike, tilt that thing forward!

Nice build. I've own two Ridge's over the past 5 years. Swell little hardtail. I enjoyed them both.

It's a burly build, but it still comes in under 30 pounds. Haven't weighed it yet, but it definitely feels lighter than my xc bike (which is sitting right at 30 pounds even and consists of a similar build with a heavier steel frame, etc.). And those tires are pretty freakin light, i think around 600 grams for the rear, so it should pedal pretty decently. As for the camera setup, I'm rockin a d80 with an sb-600 mounted off-camera on a tripod.
