Well I wanted to wait on this review for reasons I'll explain here.

MMcG lent me a set of Sycros wheels as part of the "Supercaliber Reclaimation Project". The Super Cal has a notoriously flexy rear end and when I got it last year for Christmas (My wife rules!) it pretty much hung in the garage unridden as I played around with steel hardtails. It was basically unrideable in my book.

Well about a month ago I decided to take my SuperCal back and "fix" the problem with a stiffer rear wheel. It comes stock with the Bonty Race wheelset.

The Syncros wheel set is billed as more of a trail use rim which I'm not all that used to. I come from a racing back ground and that's what I still lean towards today.

These rims are a pretty wide rim (compared to my usual standards) at 28mm.
I didn't do too much reaserch on the hubs but I can say they engaged perfectly the whole time and gave off that "Hey I'm coming!" freewheel sound that you either love or hate. Plus they are white..I loved that about them.

Now the reason I waited on the review was because I wanted to do a back to back comparison with them and the Race wheels as part of my project.
I gotta say the Syncros wheels were pretty awsome in my application of stiffening up the lateral flex of the rear end. The 32 spokes and wide rim kept the rear end pretty much right on track. Compared to going back to the Race wheel's (which I did up the tension considerably and used a bolt on skewer) 28 holes and narrow rims, it was night and day. Yesterday's ride on the Races were better than usually, but I till yearned for the other wheels.

Another forgotten benefit was that the wider rim changes the tire dramatically.
It gives a wider stance to the casing and the ability to run lower presssures. Huge improvement.

All in all I gotta say that these are a great wheel to consider if you're looking for a trail wheel or a raceable wheel and you're on the larger side (6'5" 200ish here).

Thanks for serving as a "guest" reviewer Toddre!

I've been riding these Syncros hoops a bit as well and comparing them to a set of American Classic wheels.

The Am Classics have been great - I'd classify them as an excellent lightweight XC wheelset.

The Syncros Wheels - I'd definitely throw them into the Aggressive XC/Trail Bike category. Deep wide and strong rims, and excellent hub engagement makes for a really stiff and sturdy wheelset that provides gobs of confidence to ride hard and take the "tough lines" down the trails.

As Todd mentions they also really allow wider trail bike 29er tires to shine.

Here are some spec's on the wheels for your information:

/ Intended use: Freeride / All Mountain
/ syncros white DS 28 sleeved and eyeleted rims with Bead Lock System™
Availabel in 26" or 29"
/ syncros FL hubs (20mm thru or QR front)
/ syncros signature QR’s
/ DT Swiss Competion 2.0/1.8mm double butted spokes
/ DT Swiss spoke nipples
/ syncros Snap On rim strips
/ 32 hole, 3x build
/ 100% hand-built
/ Lightweight and bombproof
/ Available combinations:
Matte white rim with black hub or matte white rim with matte white hub

All in all a rock solid wheelset that performs and looks great. These test wheels are all white (including hubs and skewers) - pretty pimptastic! Also, of note, these wheels aren't machine built, but rather each wheelset is handbuilt - something you don't often get from other wheelsets. The wheels were really well built and have held up under some hard riding on our rooty, rocky, technical terrain here in Connecticut.

More to follow shortly on these and we'll keep updating this thread into a long term report as other "test pilots" are in the que to thrash these wheels a bit.

Best,

Mark

Hey guys!

Thanks for this review, but how's about some pics?............

Oh, and whilst I am at it, how about a weight for the pair?

Thanks in advance!

I didn't take photos of the wheels when they arrived, but here are a few shots of them mounted up to a bike, with rider attached and not attached.

As for weight - I'm not sure. But for a true and tough trail bike 29er wheelset, I don't think the weight is bad at all. I have found the hub engagement to be excellent as well.

And how about a video link for good measure:

Happy to Help GT!

I'm surprised we don't see more of these wheelsets (or at a minimum the Syncros rims) surfacing - especially on some of the new FS offerings from Turner/Ventana/Lenzsport. I think they'd be a great compliment to those types of frames/bikes. And they certainly don't hurt on a hardtail either!

Adding a new photo of the wheels mounted up to the Carver Bumblebee (yep a 29er will clear with the right tire choice on this frame). It was interesting to note the difference in tire volume between a Rampage and an Exiwolf after I uploaded this photo to the Photobucket Account.

I'm going to throw a Racing Ralph up front to see visually how that compares to the Exiwolf. I tried the RR 2.4 in back on the Carver and it was a no go due to the mega high volume of the RR.

From Rosy at Ritchey/Syncros "We did a quick measurement of weight on these wheels and came up with, 1003g (front) and 1137g(rear). Not official but should be pretty accurate."

That's reasonable for the intended use here. Thanks for getting that info!

I agree, it's weird that you don't hear about these wheels. Some things just don't seem to click, or..........could it be the color? Maybe if Syncros did these in a black we would see more interest. Whattya think?

GT - Syncros does do them in Black! Yep, you've got several options.

You could go all black with black hubs and rims, all white with white hubs and rims, and I suspect you could do white hubs with black rims or white hubs with black rims. Since they are handbuilt by Ritchey/Syncros, I'd suspect you could pick and choose your color combination.

Thanks! I think a black rim, at least, might be more palatable to 29"er guys, who don't seem to be into the white stuff like the AM/FR/DH guys are.

I've never seen a black one, it might be good to get an image of one at least for this thread.

So, Syncros is hand building these to order, you think? That's cool. Much like Velocity with their Blunts then.

I would suspect it would be to order, but I do know they are all handbuilt. There was a set of black rimmed wheels in the empty beer classifieds a week or so ago. Imagine Black Rims with the same stickers as you see on the white ones (removable btw) and there you have it.

Here ya go:

They look pretty sharp in black eh?
