They should all be suitable for filtering out the NA nasties. I've had very good experience with my Pur Explorer(?) filter. It's old, though... so I can't testify to their new stuff.

I don't remember what I have. I'd recommend carrying iodine or similar purification tablets as a backup.

Good advice. I keep those in my backpacking medical kit at all times.

Good topical disinfectant and purifier. Almost as useful as bourbon.

I have an MSR Miniworks, always does the job for me, and screws right onto my cancer bottle, which is convenient.

I was referring to iodine be almost as usefull as bourbon, it covers 2 of the 3 main uses.

While these aren't for sale quite yet, the system is slick. The actual filter is very small and light. The system eliminates having to manually pump water and fill bottles.
Fill dirty bag and hang. Dispense clean water from clean bag or hook up to your hydration tube.

I've been hiking for 10 + years now and I would suggest to you the "Katadyn Hiker Filter". I use to have the "Hiker Pro" then Katadyn bought Hiker and changed the name from "pro" to "hiker" I have used the same filter for the past 10 years and it works just as good today as it did the first day I bought it. Katadyn Hiker for any type of backpacking!

MSR Sweetwater if this is your first filter.

Carry a bottle of tincture of iodine just for backup.

i agree with ems781. Ive been backpacking for quite a few years and the Katadyn is the most solid one that i have used. Easy to repair on the trail (comes with extra seals and grease which is all you need), filters quick, and have never gotten Giardia! Had some issues with the MSR Miniworks pump, i didnt like it at all. Check out some of the gravity filters that are starting to come out. That is gonna be the direction im gonna try to head when i need a new one.

Those Katadyn filters look exactly like the Pur ones of yesteryear... I wonder if they bought them out or something...

When I actually cared it seemed to me most of the good filters always seemed to be the same thing.

Nothing beats finding a nice melting glacier on a hot day, scooping up some fresh meltwater and drinking it straight up, tasty.

Well ive use the mini works, but its really not that "mini" I have also use the Steripen and it worked pretty good, but it doesnt take out the taste (we were melting fresh snow and it tasted great: http://www.hydro-photon.com/
