The Mayans and Egyptians constructed incredible feats of architecture able to weather the test of time, but they had no idea their pyramids would inspire the shape of the latest carbon-neutral super-structure to hit Dubai. Dubai-based environmental design firm Timelinks recently released some eye-catching renderings of the gigantic eco pyramid - aptly named Ziggurat - with plans for its official unveiling scheduled for the Cityscape Dubai event which runs October 6-9 of this year. The ginormous pyramid will cover 2.3 square kilometers and will be able to sustain a “community” of up to 1 million.
That, is insane.

"Listen, lad. I built this kingdom up from nothing. When I started here, all there was was swamp. Other kings said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em. It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So, I built a third one. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp, but the fourth one... stayed up! And that's what you're gonna get, lad: the strongest castle in these islands."

OT: Can bacon and ham be made carbon neutral? I know that beef rapes the environment, but I know nothing of the pig trade. Help?

The island is a manifestation of the dream our late leader Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan had, to provide wildlife, whether it be from Arabia, Africa or Asia, with a secure and peaceful home. That it certainly did. Ever since it was set up in 1971, Sir Bani Yas can only be described as 'heaven on earth' for the generations of wildlife that calls it home. An abundance of food, lush greenery, dedicated veterinary care ensuring they get their minerals and vitamins, plenty of mating opportunities without the slightest fear of being hunted or their habitat being destroyed as it would in the wild.

Dubai has several green buildings on there way up. I know they have one sky scraper going up that has 3 wind turbines built in to it. The other is a 200 unit residential building that is completely solar and ROTATES. I believe 1 revolution / week or 5mm/s.

Smithfield Foods (No. 1 US pork producer) is one of the largest polluters in the US. Who knows how bad their international locations are:

I think that design is amazing. I'd hate to have to live in it, but it is amazing.

Dubai has got their sh1t sorted when it comes to thinking outside the box...

Probably a good idea to build a place you never need to leave as going outside sucks in that part of the world at this time of the year.

There was a great article in Ride from some guys who road tripped there. They said it's the freakiest place you've ever visited with massive monstrosities of metal everywhere, most of which are vacant, huge malls with nobody in them...waiting.
