Does anyone know of any companies that make really heavy rate rear shock springs that will fit a dhx? With the really high levergae ratio of my v10 I need an 800 or 850 x 2.75 for the stock length shock and about a 900 x 2.5 for the shorter shock. Fox only makes up to 800 pound springs and they are out of those. I need to get a new spring as soon as possible. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks, James

I remember Pohl Springs used to make custom winds for customers. Not sure if they are still in business, but a google search might find a hit.

for a 6'7 dude 270 pounds isn't exactly overweight
Actually you have an "obese" BMI of 30.4

If you look on santa cruz's site they have a list of spring rate to rider weight chart. Seems for there V10 they add an extra 50lb spring rate for every 20 more lbs of biker. So according to them you should need a 650 or 700lb spring. http://www.santacruzmtb.com/v10/index.php?setup=1

Another consideration...
Even if you could get a spring that stiff, the damper in the shock is going to be doing way more work than it was designed to do. Hence why fox only makes up to 800# springs. IMO, anything over about 600# means you need a bike with a lower leverage ratio.
Now that more companies are offering 3.5" stroke shocks, I think we will see a lot more frames with 2.8/1 ratios.

That may be an option. I talked to them but they said it would be difficult to make a spring that fits the limits the dhx requires.

Mine is the old style v10, pre 05. That bike has alot higher leverage ratio than the new ones

I dont plan on switching frames. I finally found a bike that kinda fits me so now I gotta find a shock that works decent. I may try an air shock or maybe its time for an avy or double barrel.

Totally undertsand on this, as I am a fellow big-un at 255. I run a 650lb Fox spring on my Marzocchi Roco. I had talked at length with the guys at Cane Creek about getting a double barrel setup for my bike. They were very confident in the tuning ability of the double barrel that I could run a 500 or 600 and achieve exactly what I wanted.....however the fundage never matched my desire!

Maybe ride something besides the highest leverage production frame available in the last 6 years.

I just picked up an 8.5x2.5 avy dhs so I'm going to give craig a call tomorrow and see if he can get it work the way I want it to. If not then I might have to buy a double barrel.

hey before you do that look in to this company

http://www.pohlsprings.com/

i have had them make myself some springs in the past for a bike of mine. they do some of the best work going. also they are not too expensive

also to the guy that pulled out the BMI thing. that system completely fails ob people over the 6'3" mark. i'm 6'5" and weight 260lbs and i came hang with the best of people when it comes to general fitness test.

I did talk to them but they werent sure if they could make a spring that fits the limitations the dhx requires and still have enough stroke. At least with the avy it should give them a bigger ID and OD to work with.

After talking to craig the avy is out. They dont make a spring heavy enough. I just picked up a dhx air and I am going to try that out tomoorow. If that doesn't work then its time for a double barrel.

one thing i will say is that i just put a manitou spring on my DHX last night and it memory serves right they make their springs as stiff as 750lbs. you might want to try that before going too far.

Check out phattire.com. They sell a complete line of manitou springs up to 750.

i'm sorry, I'm one of those fat people that actually dare show themselves outside for all the world to see.. and gasp I ride DH............

I've lost a ton of weight and don't need it anymore but Call and ask them. They might not have the 750 listed anymore because it was really hard for him to get but he still had a line on some.....

I'm running a 650 8.75x2.75 on my frame (%th or Swinger 6 way)

That's teh other thing IF you can get a manitou swinger 6 way. i've had nothing but good luck with them and they are a lower ratio that the fox (Or higher?) which you can run a lower weight spring on those vs. the fox.

I'm running a 6 way on my bullit (8.5x2.5) and still have my 5th element on my DH frame.

Check out Santa cruz bikes clearance section. they are blowing out the 5th elements for the v-10/vpp for $99.
