the fells is fine for xc single and double track. stick to the marked bike paths as it's a conservation area. outside the city is lynn woods, which is XC but some of it is very rocky and more suited to a freeride type bike. Further outside is the vietnam/rt 20 trails, which I've heard are quite challenging and freeride oriented.
My wife is originally from the Boston area and would like to eventually look at moving back. I'm addicted to my biking and need to know I won't go into withdrawal by moving from the pacific northwest. :^) I also do road biking and commuting, but I believe that shouldn't be an issue since just about anywhere has pavement.

Geez. Pacific Northwest to Boston. That's a tough one. I've never been out west but I can only imagine the quality of riding out there. That being said there's pleny of riding in the Boston area. I've found you have more options north of the city, but there's plenty of trails on all sides. You also have Highland Mountain in NH for park riding and Kingdom Trails in VT for epic XC riding. As far as road riding goes there's a ton of it in the burbs and all over new england for that matter.
If you make it over for a visit let me know and I'll show you some pretty killer trails.
Should be a link to Woodsguy's profile. Click on "about me" and then the link in his signature. Its a google map of New England trails. Some have pics and videos attached.
Good luck! I don't think you'll be disappointed in what you can find to ride around here... but then again, I'm a newbie & I've never been to the pacific northwest either...
