Juicy 3s and oil/contamination

¡Mira, una ardilla!
Hello, everybody. A month or so ago, I got a brand-new set of Avid Juicy 3s at bargain price. So far, I'm really happy with their stopping power and modulation (I run mostly street/dirt). However, I've had to clean the rotors and pads THREE TIMES over this month. I didn't touch the rotors, oil from my chain hasn't touched 'em, and yet they started somewhat out of nowhere to scream like an elephant in heat, and their sotpping power went down to nearly zero... Luckily, I keep a spray gun loaded with Isopropyl alcohol at hand, as someone suggested in another thread.

I come from mechanical Shimano 465s, and ride the exact same places. Are the Juicys sooo damn sensitive to dirt/oil??? My mech brakes weren't that anal...

Has anybody had this problem? How do you deal with it?

Thanks in advance,

Luis

From the type of riding you say you do I would be suprised if the pads had got glazed- if they get too hot a glassy coating can form which could explain the loss of power and squeal, if they look too shiny take a file to them. Alteranatively they may have been contaminated- I've been really impressed with my 3's so far!

Check the rotor bolts are tight. Also a dab of copperslip on the BACK of the pads can help reduce vibration and squeeling.

Check the disc isn't off. Spin the wheel slowly and press the brake lever and see if the disc moves side to side at any point.

OK, I'll see if I could get Copperslip or something like that (I live in Argentina). The funny thing about the squealing is it isn't consistent. I mean, when my old 495's got the pads contaminated, they started squealing (and stopped braking), and continued that way 'till I changed the pads and cleaned the rotors.

So far, the Juicys have been braking smoothly for about three weeks, with just a couple of squealing/fading episodes in the middle. They didn't even happen in the same conditions, one time I was jumping in the city and the other time I was riding XC-like trails in the woods. I'm no John Tomac, or anything like that, so speed/overheating doesn't seem to be the the cause. In both cases, the fading/squealing dissappeared as it arrived: magically.

I'm kinda getting used to it...

Anyway, thanks a lot for all the answers. I'll try to get the Copperslip.

Can you get some IPA wipes (the little sterylizing wipes they give before injections) 100% IPA wipes are superb for cleaning your discs and they evaporate and leave no residue. Once you've wiped them, try not to touch them with bare fingers. This might stop the squeel.

Another tip is to pour cola on the disc. Sounds crazy but it works.

I've had the exact same problem....
I got a wire brush and lightly attacked my rotors with it....
Make sure the pads are in plce properly aswell and that the caliper is centred properly....
