New bike w/ XT brakes. Both were sharp on first two rides. Then layed bike on its side for 15 minutes. Now rear brake is softer than front. It still works, but not as well as front brake. What should I do? Thx.

laying the bike down shouldn't make a difference, sounds like theres maybe some air in there and worth a bleed- before that tho, try pulling the lever and tieing it up and leaving over night, can move some of the small bubbles up and out of the reservoir.

08 XT brakes?

Apparently a real pain to set up - friends of mine have re-bled and reset 3 or 4 times before they settle and sort themselves out, but when they are setup they work really well. I know people who've been to the Alps with 180mm front and rear and they've been flawless.

Go back to the shop and ask them to rebleed if its a new bike.

Assuming no air in the system or any fluid leaking -

What do the pads look like? Namely the rears; do they look glazed or "polished" ?

Try swapping the pads - move the front to the rear and vice versa - and see if the problem follows.

How about the rotors themselves? You can try cleaning the rear rotor or just swap the rotors as well.

There is also the off chance that you have a bad master cylinder or you have the push-rod adjusted too far in.
