Anyone that knows me well understands how important my wrist brace is to me. I can't do anything without it, and this brace is single handedly responsible for me still being able to ride a mountain bike and motorcycle. It's made by a company called Allsport Dynamics (www.allsportdynamics.com).

They make custom and OTS carbon fiber wrist braces in several different models to accommodate people with severe wrist and hand injuries. I had my brace made in spring of 2005 after I obliterated my wrist the previous season at the Schweitzer NMBS course. Since the day I received it, that brace has been with me on every dirt bike ride, mountain or ride bike ride, gym workout, hike, ect. When I'm not actually riding, it lives in my messenger bag just in case.

My brace has been through a lot in the last 4 years because being my brace isn't easy. It has slid across Utah slickrock, Idaho shale beds, and Oregon's thick muddy singletrack. I've grazed it on trees, rocks, fence posts, and anything else you might encounter on the trail. And after all that, it took four years to show any signs of needing a little "fixing up."

A couple of the pivots has started to get lose and the liner, as much as I washed it, had developed that "old mountain bike shin guard" odor. And with so much of the paint scratched and chipped I figured it was time to give the old girl a break, send her off to the factory, and get her checked out.

I contacted the company who made the brace and arranged to send it in for a little overhaul. Their customer service tech Brad informed me that the brace has a lifetime warranty and only the consumable portion of the brace (the liner) would be my responsibility. Fantastic.

I carefully boxed up my brace, insured it heavily, and with some small amount of paranoia, sent her off. Keep in mind this was the first time in four years that my brace had not been in my possession. I received delivery confirmation that the brace had reached it's destination. Some days passed and I didn't hear anything from the company. And then this morning, with a small amount of horror, I realized that the company was in Texas. The eastern side of Texas, in a town called Nacogdoches.

I called them this morning and much to my relief I got an answer. I spoke with Brad and was happy to learn that their office had been spared and all the employees were fine. But most of the town was out of power and still cleaning up after Ike. Not only were they all alright, but they had all started back to work on Monday and my brace was finished and being shipped back to me today.

I can't say enough good things about this company. They offer a one of a kind product that they stand behind 100%. Their turn around time is incredibly fast, even in hurricane conditions. They treat their customers incredibly well and I believe it's because they truly understand how much some of us depend on them to continue doing the activities we love.

If anyone is in need of a product like this, Allsport Dynamics can't be matched both in quality and customer service. I recommend them whole heartedly to anyone with severe hand and wrist injuries that needs wrist support to continue riding. They make a number of different brace options and they can all be checked out here: www.allsportdynamics.com.

This is a pic of me riding in Moab this spring, with my lovely wrist brace (right hand). It's designed specifically for sports applications that require unimpaired grip (bikes, motos, snowmobiles). And for as big and supportive as it is, when your wearing it you don't even notice it's there!

I was just digging around and I don't think I have any good close ups, just riding pics! I'll snap a couple when I get it back. But, here is the product page for my specific model, the HXT ExteFlex:

http://www.allsportdynamics.com/exteflex.htm

The ExteFlex limits both flexion and extension with custom stops. So essentially your wrist can't move past it's safe zone in either direction.

I would love a second brace. The hitch though is that my insurance footed the bill for it. I could get a second one paid for it the first one didn't fit anymore or if the size has off, for example if my wrist got bigger or smaller, or a gained or lost flexion or extension. The custom model I have was somewhere in the neighborhood of $2000-$2500. But with my insurance kicking I only had to contribute $175 of that.

Here's a slightly better shot of it while playing camera man for the hubby.
