Queenstown would be one of the best places, chairlift access, dream park and heaps of good riding. There a nationals round on down there in janurary I think.

port hills in Christchurch are worth a look. Fun tracks lots of variety. I wouldn't go TOO much out of my way to ride them though.

Here is what I would suggest you ride in order of priority if you are on a time/money limit.

Queenstown (you could spend weeks here and not get bored, chairlifts close by that open over summer, nationals DH races and the Brake burner super D)

Wanaka (Not so much shuttle access but some sweet freeride/all-mountain type trails, new jump park opened just recently too)

Christchurch/Canterbury (lots of gnarly downhill but some super smooth flowy tracks starting to appear, sweet shuttle access, the trails here are improving by the week. I was gonna move away but I'm super stoked to be staying here now)

Rotorua (heaps of nice xc and downhill trails all in the one area, the best the North Island has to offer)

Wellington (some really nice trails spread out over the whole city, not so much downhill though)

From what I understand, Nelson got pretty Hammered over winter so I don't know how good the riding is any more. There was a bit of nice downhill but most of it was on forestry land (ie harder to get access)

The North Island dh cup is on during January, should be able to get some racing if you're that way inclined. Try get to Levin, its a nice full on track, and the final of the series mentioned above.
