Can anyone recommend a skate/bike shoe fitting these criteria:

Mid or high top

Heel padding <----bruised heels suck donkey dix

Soft, but not gummy sole with decent grip (I have 510s for DH, don't like for street/dj)

Heel cushioning is a biggie. I also like a bit of arch support, and a shoe that feels comfortable.

Go by your local NIKE outlet or Factory stores , I was recently up in Oregon and picked up some sweeet Nike 6.0's for dirt cheep at the Nike store !

I really like the 6.0 line , good fit grippy soles and the shoes seem to outlast my Etnies by over a month . They also have some pretty cool hightops and mid's also

Vegan Rowley's have yet to let me down skating and on bikes. Trujillo's are almost as tough. Unlike fad brands, Vans has been around the industry since day 1.

well initially it was a joke, but after thinking about it, with a gel pad i cant see u getting a heel bruise, its worth a try
it works. i bruised my heel trying three hops with some really unpadded shoes, but after it healed i could use the same shoes just fine with the heel pad gels. its nice because you can still wear thin-soled, grippy shoes while not having to worry about bruised heels.

and as to the original question. i'm rockin these lakai's and they're pretty sweet. http://www.lakai.com/product/08/HO08/footwear/team_models/telford/#

Aiiight, Ima go get some more cheap, Big 5 shoes and add some gel padding. Today's newspaper ads show a few $15 and $20 pairs that look decent enough. Maybe I'll get a few pairs.

I have a pair of Etnies that have lasted me quite awhile and the sole seems really sticky to me.

I took out the stock footbed and replaced it with a "Superfeet" insert.

I originally used them for my hiking boots, but I thought I'd try them in a skate shoe to see how they worked. Now I'm hooked. They give you good arch support and a nice heal cushion. They are also quite a bit stiffer than the standard footbed which means your foot doesn't get sore from wrapping around the pedals.

It's not BMX but Rome Snowboards has an interesting thing to say about big brands coming into smaller sports:

As far as a good riding shoe, I've been happy with Orchid. Brown colorway w/ gum sole works great at the trails. My current pair are the Majestics which are a mid top style. Another benefit of their design (not sure if this is intentional) but it seems to keep dirt out of the shoe more than any other brand I've had.

I've also been happy with certain Etnies models.

My experience with orchid has been pretty good. I had the Hex with grey soles. The soles wore faster than other brands I've worn, but gripped better. Also, the uppers are still in great shape even after the soles are dead.

I just gots me a pair of DVS at the local skate shop to replace my beloved Vans  and the next day I was at a department store called Kohls and found a nice pair of converse skate shoes for 15 bucks on the sale rack! I couldn't pass them up!

Bought a pair of Nike Air Mogans, they are alright, comfortable, ankle protection is good, decent heel padding.

Bought a pair of Adidas Berms, and they have awesome heel padding, tons of arch support, and feel really good. Scored them at JensonUSA for $42.
