We found a stray cat the other week and took it in with hopes of finding it a good home. Well, we never found anyone and the new kitten wasn't meshing well with our 2 yr old cat so the time came to take it to the shelter. I explained to the kids that we weren't keeping the kitten from day 1 and that we were just babysitting it but, of course, they all became very attached to "taffy."
So my 5 yr old daughter has been out sick all week from school and i picked up my 4 yr old from school at noon.......with the cat in the car. They both knew we were taking taffy to her new home at the shelter and were in good spirits as long as taffy was with them in the car. we got to the shelter and turned the cat over to the staff. i had to put taffy in a cat cage while i filled out the paperwork and the girls had a good time playing with her in the cage. then it was time to go and my 4 year old baby girl got the most pitiful and despairing look on her face and cried, "i don't want to leave taffy"
i cradled her in my arms and walked her back to the car with my lackadaisical 5yr old in tow (she was unaffected by the transfer) my baby girl was sobbing as if she had just lost her mommy and i did my best to play the "tough love" dad as i passsed by a staff member on the way out. but as we pulled out of the long driveway i pulled over, got her out of her car seat and cried with her, telling her how sorry i was the whole time.
all of you parent monkies know what i'm talking about...or you probably will some day. i've never been so overcome with emotion from watching my daughter cry....heck, crying is an everyday event for her but the look on her face when we left the shelter just simply broke my heart.
talk about them having me wrapped around their little fingers.......
