Hi!
What gear ratio should I use on a diamondback lucky 24? I use 36/18 on my dirt/urban assault 26", and I would like something close to this ratio...
Thanks!

36 /16 gets you real close. 24/11 is about dead on, depending on tire size. 26/11 will be a bit taller that your 36/18.

How did we come up with these? Not too difficult. Take your 26" wheel's gear ratio, which is 36/18 = 2.00. For a 24" wheel, you need to account for the different wheel size, so you want your 26ers gear ratio of 2.00 and multiply that by 26"/24" and you get 2.17 - this is your target gear ratio. So, 36/16=2.25, not to far off. 24/11=2.18, virtually identical to your 26er. 26/11=2.36, a bit taller. Different tire sizes can lead to larger overall wheel diameters, and can slightly effect the feel of a gear but this gets you in the ball park.

is there any difference on the gear ratio for a diamondback lucky 24" (it's more like a 24" bmx) and a usb molly (more like a mtb on 24" wheels)? the same gear ratio will have the same feel on both bikes?
thanks!

of course it would feel the same!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's the same gear, with the same wheel size !

once again, the formula is:

# of front sprocket teeth divided by rear cog teeth, multiplied by wheel diameter.

go to the Start Menu in Windows, go to Accessories, then Calculator.

if your result is close to 55 you found a winner. as the number gets lower, it will be spinnier. as the number gets higher, it is stronger. personally, i will not ride anything spinnier than 55. for fast rides across town, up to 60 is good.

Taken from ridestreet.co.uk

Traditionally for dirt/street BMXs the ratio was 44/16.

Obviously the size of the wheel has to be taken into account. To do this divide 55 by your wheel size.

Ie:

If you have 26" wheels - 55/26=2.2=x

If you have 24" wheels - 55/24=2.3=x

So to decide on what ratio you want take the amount of teeth on the sprocket and divide this by x.

Ie:

For a 36tooth sprocket and 26" wheels - 36/2.2=16

If you want to make the gearing harder either increase the size of the sprocket or decrease the size of the rear cog.

If you want to make the gearing easier either decrease the size of the sprocket or increase the size of the rear cog.

Obviously you will have to round on certain occsasions but this is as close as you can get.

The best way to find out what ratio you prefer is to experiment! If you are using a singlespeed converter kit, get hold of an old cassete and chop and change to see what you like and what fits YOUR particular style and size. Everyone is different.

If you think anything should be added to this post, or if I have made a calculation/spelling error please PM me.

Look at this kid! The ride looks great, when can we meet up so I can check it out? Lake Geneva is having a big trail session on Saturday (no rain, hopefully) you should come up. Or we could pick up up on the way to Ray's sometime this winter.

Thanks, man! Your USB is looking good, too. Much lighter than my 28 lb. rig!
Thanks... could probably shed more, but no need. Could go with those new MAC tires, but from what I've seen, they don't go well with the runaway rims I've got...

28lb is by no means a heavy beast. I'd consider that a good weight for susp. fork bike, IMO. Esp. for the line-up of components you've got, nothing too crazy fancy, should last you a good amount of time with peace of mind.
23:10 seems like a good set-up... I probably should have gone that way instead of the stiffer 22:9... but buying drivers can get damn expensive.

I have had a mac2 blow off a runaway but after CAREFULLY reseating the tire and inflating it slowly uo to 100psi Ihave had no problems even after 8 rides at Rays this fall.

I ordered mac2's MONTHS ago and still haven't recieved them.

Anywho has anything changed at Ray's this season? The site is lacking.

Well, I guess that's the good word... but I gotta ask, are they worth the hassle in the first place? I'll be honest, I don't think I like their tread pattern really, and I'm having no problems with my current set-up as an all-around ride... so are they worth the cost, the wait, and the extra set-up time?

You know it's all your fault, Jon! If I'd never have ridden that Fallguy of yours, I'd have never got the "24-inch itch." Are you heading over to Lake Geneva? I might be able to swing it weather permitting. I'll start the campaign now.

Either way Ray's is going to happen. IT MUST! Although I will have to bring my 20" also.

I blame you, man! Pretty profound, huh?

I'll take it. I'm psyched to be back in contact, and hopefully doing more riding.

As for this weekend, the weather looks good, let me know if your going to make it and we can meet up. I've never ridden the trails, but they are big.

And Ray's, I think it would be a two bike trip for me as well, but if I had to do just one it would be my T1.

I'm off school the next couple of days so I'm trying to squeeze some last rides/digging. Hope all is well.
