I was pure bmx for the longest time because I never rode an mtb that felt right. That changed when I took a small Specialized P3 out for a spin. That's my vote and I'm 5'6".

I 2nd that but i'm not sure if the 4 or 5 inch fork travel will be suited for the bike. I mainly dirt jump with mines, running a 80mm fork on it and it's spot on. Whatever he decides, he'll enjoy the bike for sure.

Yeah, a 21.5 riot or mob frame shall suite you extremely well. I am 5-5 and I have a riot built up extremely low with a 100 ml fork. A piece of advice: Slam the drop outs and get a chain with a half link so you don't have to have a longer rear end.
