A buddy of mine is looking into a new bike. He's maybe 5' 6" or so. He rode bmx/street for years so he has some skill but now's he's enjoying the bigger bikes..

Problem is, he's riding a turd right now...

He's looking for a hardtail and will probably run a 4 or 5 inch squishy fork of some sort. Most of the frames I see seem to be long in the front end...

thoughts/suggestions? I think he wants to run gears as well...

I was pure bmx for the longest time because I never rode an mtb that felt right. That changed when I took a small Specialized P3 out for a spin. That's my vote and I'm 5'6".

Yeah, a 21.5 riot or mob frame shall suite you extremely well. I am 5-5 and I have a riot built up extremely low with a 100 ml fork. A piece of advice: Slam the drop outs and get a chain with a half link so you don't have to have a longer rear end.
