Love or hate drifting, that is pretty awesome control of a vehicle. Especially a four wheel drive one! It's kind of like NASCAR. I hate the races, but give major props to the drivers.

And for bicycle drifting, which video was it that the dude was riding around and drifting the corners on a tandem with a blow up doll?

I do hate drifting, and I'm not denying that that's an impressive amount of car control. I also hate nascar.

That being said, I know what rally drivers are capable of, and I'm sure Mr. Block is no exception...he could probably repeat the same drive on gravel, and to me, that would just be SO much more entertaining....especially if he were competing against another driver....sort of like a super special stage, much?

also...there's all the getaway in stockholm movies...but after the first, the rest were a bit of a let down. I remember one with a corvette that looked like they were doing 40 the whole time.

YoToshi, why do you think that was a mercedes? that's a huge disappointment if so...I remember they had that video for sale at the Ralph Lauren show here in Boston.

According to recent claims by Claude Lelouch, he was driving his own Mercedes in the film, and later dubbed over the sound of a Ferrari 275GTB to give the impression of much higher speeds. Calculations made by several independent groups using the film show that the car never exceeds 140 km/h (85 mph), which seems to lend credence to his recent comments.

[...]

Until recently, there was no confirmation of who was driving or what car he was driving. Over the years, various sources claimed an F1 driver was at the wheel of a Le Mans Matra 675, Ferrari 275 GTB, or an Alpine A110. However, Claude Lelouch confirmed on his official website in March 2006 that he was driving, and it was a 6.9 litre Mercedes.
mercedes 450 6.9. top speed in the movie ~85 mph, avg 48 mph. still a cool car and a great flick.

not necessarily....the lancia was super powerful and probably the best of the bunch, but it came right at the end of group B. I think it was 600 HP and I believe the Audi was easily capable of beating that...it just couldn't stay on the road.

Eventually I believe Audi pulled out, and a few of the others followed, and Group B kind of collapsed on itself...

how about they make it so people don't stand 2 feet away from the car on a fast turn
A lot of it was stupid fans. There were a few rallys where spectators were putting coins on the long jumps betting how far the cars would go. They would run out onto the course and lay bets, then when the helicopters folloing the Group-B cars neared they would scatter.
This worked great up until the Group-B cars were opening gaps on the helicopters and showing up while people were still on the road. There was one incident in which a Group-B car landed on a large group of spectators (on the course) killing them, and continuing to race. There was uproar, but the driver summed it up very plainly (to paraphrase) "They were on the course and I landed on them. They are dead, what was I as a driver going to be able to do? So I kept driving."

Both cars had approx. 600hp on tap, both cars were very difficult to drive, Audi ace Walter Rohrl was once quoted to say "I was starting to feel that even my thoughts were not fast enough for this car". This was after winning the Pikes Peak hill climb, so his opinion should be respected.
The main factor to the collapse of group-b was Henri Toivonen's death at the Tour de' Corse in 1986 it was the last straw for the FISA, this was the latest in a string of deadly incidents that lead to the eventual demise. A year to the day earlier Lancia lost another driver Attilio Bettega, oddly Bettega and Toivonen were wearing the same number on their cars at the time of their deaths. Strange because this was during a time when new numbers were issued for every race.
EDIT- one last note, a cool thing about the Lancia is it was both turbo and supercharged giving it amazing acceleration, reportedly able to run 0-60 on dry tarmac in a mere 2.5 sec. on par with F1 cars of the era.
